SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE SPORTS PROGRAM
MEN’S & WOMEN’S GOLF


SECTION 1.  TITLE

 1.1. South Atlantic Conference Golf Committee

SECTION 2.  COMMITTEE STRUCTURE

 2.1. The head golf coach from each member institution shall serve on the committee and have one vote.

 2.2. The golf coaches committee shall be a recommending body to the Athletic Directors Council regarding golf matters.

 2.3. The committee shall meet officially once a year and submit a report of recommendations for the following year of operations.

 2.4. Matters relative to either men’s or women’s golf will be voted on by the coaches of schools sponsoring the appropriate programs.

SECTION 3. OFFICERS

 3.A.  Status and Term of Office

 3.A.1. The committee chair shall be elected by the Golf Committee at the official meeting.  The term shall be for two years.

 3.B.  Duties

 3.B.1. The chair shall call and preside over meetings of the committee.  The chair shall make all necessary arrangements and report in the proper format all recommendations to the Athletic Directors Council through the AD liaison for the golf committee.

 3.B.2. A copy shall also be submitted to the SAC Commissioner.

SECTION 4. MEETING AND QUORUM

 4.A.  Date and Site

 4.A.1. Committee will meet each academic year.  Final recommendations should be made at the meeting closest to March. One meeting may be held at the conference tournament site.

 4.B.  Reporting

 4.B.1. The annual report of the Golf Committee shall be filed with the AD liaison for golf and the Conference office no later than March 1.

 4.C.  Quorum

 4.C.1. A majority of all conference representatives present constitutes a quorum, but five (5) votes are necessary to recommend a change in policies and procedures.

SECTION 5. CONFERENCE PLAY

 5.A.  General Policies and Procedures

 5.A.1. Conference championship will be determined by a 54-hole Golf tournament in the spring (Revised, 2002).

 5.A.2. No regular season play is required.

 5.A.3. The Chairman of the golf committee shall be responsible for distribution of all tournament information.

 5.A.4. Official entry forms must be sent to the Athletic Director of the Host Institution, the host club golf professional, and/or the golf chairman. A specified date shall be set prior to the tournament.

 5.B.  Regular Season Format

 5.B.1. No regular season play is required.

 5.C.  Playing Rules

 5.C.1. All NCAA, USGA and SAC rules are applicable.

 5.C.2. All host club rules are applicable.

 5.C.3 No rangefinders are allowed during competition. (March 2006)

 5.D.  Game Officials

 5.D.1. The Golf Committee, in association with the host club professional, shall serve as Rules Committee of Golf the tournament.

 5.D.2 The host club professional may serve as the tournament director.

 5.E.  Protest of Officials Decision

 5.E.1. Public comments about game officials by coaches or institutional representatives is prohibited.

 5.E.2. Protests must be in writing and have the signatures of the Head Coach and Athletic Director.  Protests should be submitted to the AD Liaison for Golf with a copy to the Commissioner.

SECTION 6.  CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS

 6.A.  Tournament Format

 6.A.1. The host institution will be determined by the Conference approved rotation system.  If any changes are necessary in the host site, the responsibility will rest with the host institution (in association with the Conference office).

 6.A.2. 54 hole tournament (all teams) (Revised, 2002).

 6.A.3. Must play at least 18 holes to determine a champion.

 6.A.4. Seeding for the first round of the SAC Tournament shall be determined by head-to-head competition among SAC teams during the regular season. The committee chair shall forward final seeding to the SAC office prior to the tournament. Seeding for the second and third rounds of the SAC Tournament shall be determined according to play on the previous day.

 6.B.  Coaches Meeting at the Conference Tournament

 6.B.1. A meeting of all head coaches or his/her designee participating in the Conference tournament, the host Athletic Director, and a representative of the Conference office may be held the day before the beginning of the SAC tournament.  All tournament details shall be reviewed.

 6.B.2. Attendance is mandatory for all participating schools.

SECTION 7.  AWARDS

 7.A.  Player of Year

 7.A.1. Selected by the Coaches Committee at the end of the regular season (Revised, 2002)

 7.A.2. Plaque awarded.

 7.B.  Freshman of the Year

 7.B.1. Top Freshman vote-getter in All-Conference voting (Revised, 2002)

 7.B.2  Freshman of the Year is available to any player in his/her first year of athletic competition. (Revised, March 2005)

 7.B.2. Plaque awarded.

 7.C.  Coach of the Year

 7.C.1. Selected by the Coaches Committee at the end of the regular season (Revised, 2002)

 7.C.2. Plaque awarded.

 7.D.  All-Conference Team

 7.D.1. Selected by the Coaches Committee at the end of the season. 

 7.D.2. A First and Second All Conference Team will be selected.

 7.D.3. Certificate awarded.

 7.E.  Tournament Winner

 7.E.1. The tournament winning team shall receive a tournament trophy. In golf the tournament winner is the Conference Champion.

 7.E.2. Personalized certificates will be awarded to each team member the week following the championship.

 7.F.  All-Tournament Team

 7.F.1. The top five finishers, including ties, in the Conference Tournament will be named First Team All-Tournament, and the second five finishers, including ties, will named to the Second Team All-Tournament. (Revised, 2002)

 7.G.2. Personalized certificate awarded.

 7.H.  Tournament Most Valuable Player

 7.H.1. The tournament MVP will be the top finisher in the Conference Tournament (Revised, 2002)

 7.H.2. Plaque awarded. 

 7.I.  SAC Honor Roll

 7.I.1. All South Atlantic Conference golfers who have a cumulative 3.20 GPA or better at the end of the spring semester and have completed the season shall be a member of the SAC Academic Honor Roll.

 7.I.2. Composite certificate awarded.

 7.I.  SAC Presidents' Award

 7.I.1. Nominees for the SAC Presidents Award will be the top male and female Scholar-Athlete as selected by each institution (if applicable). The nominees represent the best of both academic and athletic qualities.

 7.I.2. Plaque awarded.

 7.J. SAC Athlete of the Year Award

 7.J.1. Nominees for the SAC Athlete of the Year Award shall be the top male and female as as selected by each institution. 

 7.J.2. Plaque awarded.

 7.K.  South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete Award

 7.K1. Nominees for the South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete Award shall have a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA, at least sophomore status, excel in academics, athletics and community/leadership activities.

 7.K.2. Plaque will be awarded.

 7.L.  South Atlantic Conference Senior Participation Award

 7.L1. Awarded to each athlete who is completing his or her eligibility.

 7.L.2. SAC senior memento awarded. (Revised, 2004)

SECTION 8. AMENDMENTS TO OPERATING POLICIES

 8.1. All recommended amendments must be in the annual report of the Golf Committee and submitted no later than two weeks after the Conference tournament meeting to the Golf Committee Athletic Director liaison and the South Atlantic Conference office.  The Athletic Director's Council will act on all recommendations during their spring meeting.  Amendments will be for the following year of play.

SECTION 9. PUBLICITY

 9.1. All regular season results shall be reported to the Conference Information Director on each Thursday.  Weekly press releases provide conference results, standings and statistics. 

SECTION 10. PROTOCOL

 10.1. All teams will exercise a hospitable attitude in treating visiting teams as guests and in the manner they would want to be treated.

 10.2. Tobacco ban.

 10.2.a. The use of all tobacco products by individuals on the golf course - as well as during other Conference activities such as banquets, autograph sessions, press conferences and post game interviews - is prohibited.  Violations of this policy shall be dealt with by the appropriate tournament official with a warning that is applicable to all team members and their ejection.

SECTION 11. PRACTICE SCHEDULE

 11.A.  In Season

 11.A.1 Determined by NCAA, USGA and SAC rules.

 11.B.  Out of season

 11.B.1. Determined by NCAA, USGA and SAC rules.

SECTION 12. UNIFORMS

 12.1. Proper golf attire shall be worn in accordance with the host club rules and generally accepted golf standards.

SECTION 13. BALLS

 13.1. Conform to USGA standards.
            
SECTION 14. INCLEMENT WEATHER

14.1. If rained out on any day and all teams have completed the same 9 holes, then those 9 holes will count towards championship.

SECTION 15. ELIGIBILITY

15.1. All South Atlantic Conference rules and regulations, as well as the rules of our National Association are applicable for all participants.

15.2. Transfers: Conference requires 1 year in residence at the certifying institution for student-athletes transferring from another South Atlantic Conference member institution. Appeals are handled on a case-by-case basis through the institution the student-athlete desires to leave. (July, 2006)

SECTION 16. TIE GAMES

 16.1. Ties in the championship will be played off with all five (5) members of team playing and counting best four (4) scores.

 16.2. Medalist ties will be decided by sudden death play-off at a hole determined by the host club professional and/or the golf committee.  The desired order of holes chosen for this playoff will be #1, then #10 (1999).

SECTION 17. MISCELLANEOUS

 17.1. The winner of the Conference golf tournament shall be the Conference champion and gain points toward the SAC Athletic Excellence Award.

  17.1.a  In the sports of golf and cross country, “to be considered for and    compete for SAC Athletic Excellence points, a team must have    competed in, and completed, the minimum NCAA regular season    requirements to be considered for SAC Championships (Revised,    July 2004)

  17.1.b  A team in golf and cross country that competes and does not post a    team score does not receive any points toward the SAC Athletic    Excellence Award, with a right to appeal to the Commissioner’s    Office. (Revised, July 2004)

17.2. Wherever applicable, polices and procedures governing the administration and conduct of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Men's and Women’s Golf championships shall be utilized.

17.3. Parents and spectators are to remain on the cart path only and are not permitted on the practice range or the putting green during the conference tournament. (March, 2005)

17.4. Unsportsmanlike conduct: A significant display of misconduct, to include inappropriate language will result in the following penalty (March, 2005)
 17.4.a First offense: Warning
 17.4.b Second offense: Two shot penalty
 17.4.c Third offense: Disqualification
