Seven Men's Soccer Players Named To Academic All-District Teams

ROCK HILL, SC -- Seven men's soccer players from the South Atlantic Conference, including three from Wingate University, were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III or IV College Division Men's Soccer Teams, it was announced Thursday.

Named to the District 3 first team are: Kerrin Sheldon, Wingate and Daniel Waymont, Mars Hill. Named to the District III second team are: Luis Carrizosa, Lenoir-Rhyne, Chris Bohach and Junior Nyemb, Wingate and Kyle Rudder, Newberry.

Named to the District 4 second team was Lance Moore from Tusculum.

The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from institutions within that District. District III includes the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. District IV includes college and universities from Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio and Michigan.

First team selections go on the national ballot for Academic All-America® honors.

Daniel Waymont

BRISTOL, CT - Mars Hill’s Daniel Waymont has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III College Division Men's Soccer First Team announced officials Thursday. This is the second consecutive year Waymont has been a first team All-District selection.

Waymont, a senior forward from Winchester, England (North Buncombe High School) carries a 3.94 grade point average in Physical Education. Waymont lead Mars Hill in goals scored (8) and total points (2). He ranks fifth in the SAC in shots, eighth in shots per game, ninth in goals and fifth in game winning goals.

Waymont, a two-time recipient of the SAC Scholar Athlete Award, is a nominee for that award again this year. He will now advance to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American ballot.

Kerrin Sheldon, Chris Bohach, Junior Nyemb

BRISTOL, CT - Wingate University senior midfielder Kerrin Sheldon (Moatsville, W.Va.) has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III men’s soccer first team (college division), selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Bulldog senior defender Chris Bohach (Charleston, W.Va.) and sophomore forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, Cameroon) were named to the second team. Sheldon and Bohach are repeat performers, while Nyemb earns All-District honors for the first time in his career.

Wingate is the only school from the Carolinas with more than two selections. Greensboro College earns two selections, while Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College and Newberry College places one person each on the Academic All-District III men’s soccer teams. District III (college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools (Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North and South Carolina.

The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (by districts) select the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III men’s soccer team. Twelve student-athletes were named first team Academic All-District III in men’s soccer. Sheldon and the other 11 first team members will advance to the national ballot.

Kerrin Sheldon was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® men’s soccer second team (college division) last year. In 2007, Sheldon has seven goals, five assists and a team-leading five match-winning goals. A Communication Studies major, Sheldon has a 3.92 GPA. On the soccer pitch, Wingate (16-3-1 overall) is the number eight team in this week’s NSCAA Division II top 25 poll.

Kerrin Sheldon was named first team All-South Atlantic Conference in 2006. He was a second team All-SAC selection in 2005. During the 2006 season, Sheldon led the Bulldogs with seven goals. He was four-for-four on penalty kicks, tops on the team. He was also named to the Daktronics All-Appalachian Region Men’s Soccer second team following the 2006 season.

Bohach has four goals and a team-high seven assists this season. This week’s SAC Player of the Week, Bohach was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III men’s soccer second team (college division), selected by CoSIDA, in 2006. A Psychology major, Bohach holds a 3.39 GPA.

In addition to his soccer exploits, Bohach is a member of Wingate’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In addition, he works in Bulldog sports information office.

Nyemb is one of the top scorers in the SAC with his 11 goals and five assists. In 2006, he was selected to the NSCAA All-Appalachian Region first team. Nyemb also earned second team All-SAC honors in 2006.

A Modern Languages major with a 3.22 GPA, Nyemb led the 2006 Bulldogs in total points with 18. Nyemb notched six goals and six assists last season. He led the Wingate club with three match-winning goals

Student-athletes selected for Academic All-District honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. He must possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). He must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution.

Wingate University is ranked tied for fourth in the top 10 of NCAA Division II Academic All-America® producing schools in the 2000’s with 25 honorees during this millennium. Wingate’s 34 Academic All-America® honorees (lifetime) is tops among all SAC schools.

Founded in 1896, Wingate University is a private four-year co-educational institution of 2,041 students, offering active learning opportunities through personalized instruction, world travel, faith development, career discovery and community service.

Wingate offers more than 40 undergraduate majors in arts and sciences, business, education, fine arts, music and sport sciences. It also offers pre-professional programs, graduate degrees in business, education, physical education and sport administration and the doctor of pharmacy degree.

In the spring of 2007, Wingate University awarded its first-ever doctor of pharmacy degrees. Bulldog student-athletes compete in 17 NCAA Division II sports.

Kyle Rudder

BRISTOL, Conn. - Newberry College defender Kyle Rudder has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III College Division Men's Soccer Team announced officials Thursday. Rudder was named to the second team.

Rudder, a 5-10 senior from Arima Trinidad, has earned a 3.79 grade point average majoring in accounting. He has been a leader on the backline for the Indians over his four seasons. From his defender position Rudder recorded one assist while also being a strong presence on defense and providing an outlet to move the ball into the midfield.

Luis Carrizosa

BRISTOL, Conn. --- Lenoir-Rhyne College’s Luis Carrizosa was named to the ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District III College Division Second Team for Men’s Soccer.

Carrizosa, a junior forward from North Bergen, N.J., ranked first on the team in assists (10) and points (18) in leading the squad to a 13-6 record in 2007.

Carrizosa, who sports a 3.49 grade point average while majoring in international business, is a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference honoree and earned NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II All-Appalachian Region First-Team accolades in 2006.

The North Bergen High School graduate has 14 goals, 16 assists and 44 points for his collegiate career so far.

Lance Moore

BRISTOL, Conn. --- Tusculum College goalkeeper Lance Moore has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV College Division Men's Soccer Second Team announced officials Thursday.
 
Moore, a 6-2, 190-pound sophomore from Morristown, Tenn., has posted a 3.69 cumulative grade point average while majoring in Business.
 
Moore has started in all 19 matches in goal this season where he has a 1.36 goals against average, including six shutouts.  Three of those shutouts have come against nationally ranked opponents Wingate University (No. 17), Lander University (No. 16) and Lenoir-Rhyne College (No. 25).
 
He is currently third in the South Atlantic Conference in save percentage (.779), saves (4.63 spm) and shutouts (6).

Tusculum (10-7-2) is ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II and has won four of its last five matches.  TC is also 2-2-2 against nationally-ranked teams this year.  The Pioneers will face eighth-ranked Wingate on Friday in a semifinal match of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, held this weekend in Rock Hill, S.C.
