The South Atlantic Conference Announces Baseball Players of the Week, Feb. 9
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Mars Hill's Rayshelon Carolina was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Placido Torres from Tusculum was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 1-7, the League announced today.
Carolina, a senior from Willemstad, Curacao, posted a .462 average at the plate with six hits and a double to lead the Lions to four wins last week. He posted a hit in each game he played in and notched a pair of contests with multiple hits and multiple RBI. He highlighted his week with two hits, a double, two RBI, a stolen base and three runs-scored in an 11-3 win over Kutztown on Feb. 7. Carolina posted a .500 on-base percentage in the four-game span and slugged .538. The honor is his first Player of the Week selection this season.
Torres, a senior from North Brunswick, N.J., struck out 12 hitters in eight shutout innings of work to lead the Pioneers to a 5-1 win over Armstrong State on Feb. 6. He scattered four hits in his outing and gave up just one walk. Torres has not given up an earned run in 13 innings of work this season and has held opponents to a .119 average at the plate. The award is his second Pitcher of the Week plaudit this season.
