The South Atlantic Conference Announces WePlayed Sports Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its WePlayed Sports Football Players of the Week for games played during the first week of the 2023 season. Emory & Henry quarterback Charles Mutter III was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week, while Catawba defensive back Deno Wardlow was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and UVA Wise kicker Kellan Dalton picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Mutter, a sophomore from King George, Va., led the Wasps to a season-opening 56-10 rout of Concord. He threw for 253 yards, completing 13 of 18 pass attempts (72.2 percent) with four touchdowns. Mutter also ran for 20 yards, finishing the game with 273 total yards of offense.
Wardlow, a sophomore from Winston-Salem, N.C., tied a Catawba program record with three interceptions in the Catawba Indians' season-opening 31-23 win over Elizabeth City State. He also had four tackles and a pass break-up, helping the Catawba defense force four ECSU turnovers.
Dalton, a junior from Berryville, Va., led the Cavaliers to the 48-0 win over Union to open the season. He was perfect on his kicks, going 2-for-2 on field goals, including a 39-yard kick, and going 6-for-6 on extra points. In all, Dalton accounted for 12 points for UVA Wise.
