Lenoir-Rhyne’s Griewisch To Run In Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Lenoir-Rhyne University sophomore Kate Griewisch, a member of the women's track and field team, will run in this year's Penn Relays. Griewisch will compete in the College Women's 10,000-meter Championship, which will take place on Thursday, April 22, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Griewisch, a native of Banner Elk, N.C., has already qualified as a provisional for the 2010 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. Griewisch holds the school record in both events (17:17 in the 5K and 36:57 in the 10K).
An outstanding cross country runner as well, Griewisch earned NCAA Division II All-American honors this year (L-R's first ever in women's cross country) and won both the South Atlantic Conference Championship race and the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional meet last fall.
A two-time First-Team All-SAC runner, Griewisch has led Lenoir-Rhyne to back-to-back South Atlantic Conference Women's Cross Country Championships.
In addition, Griewisch was named the 2009 South Atlantic
Conference Scholar-Athlete Of The Year and the United States Track
and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Region
Athlete Of The Year.
"It is a great honor for Kate (Griewisch) to have the privilege to run in the prestigious Penn Relays," said L-R Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach Jason Stewart. "Kate has continued to progress since making All-American status this past cross country season. I feel that being able to run against some of the best runners across the nation will only help her continue to improve and take her running to a higher level."
The Penn Relays is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the Unites States. The event has been held annually since 1895 by the University of Pennsylvania. The Penn Relays can attract upwards of 15,000 competitors from high schools, colleges and track clubs throughout North America and abroad. This year's event will have over 1,200 schools competing.
