Tusculum's Torres Tabbed NCBWA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week
PEMBROKE, N.C. --- Tusculum College's Placido Torres has been named the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
The North Brunswick, New Jersey senior struck out a Tusculum single-game record 16 batters in eight innings of work to pick up the win in TC's 8-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan last Saturday. For his efforts, he was named the South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week for a third time this year.
Torres allowed only one hit in his eight innings of work. The lone hit was a solo home run in the first inning, which he responded in recording the first six outs of the game via the strikeout. The 16 strikeouts are the most in over 30 years for the Pioneers.
Torres (3-0) leads the conference in strikeouts (37), wins (3) and earned run average (0.43). The home run against Kentucky Wesleyan was the only earned run he has given up in his 21 innings pitched this season. He has allowed only two runs this year overall and is limiting opposing batters to a .090 batting average.
Tusculum (7-5) returns to action this weekend as they host Stillman for a three-game series, beginning with Saturday's 2 p.m. doubleheader at Pioneer Park.
