The South Atlantic Conference Announces Astroturf SAC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, Feb. 17

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's Thomas Spitz was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Vince Apicella of Carson-Newman was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 9-15, the League announced today.

Spitz, a senior from West Chester, Pa., batted .500 with seven hits, two doubles, two home runs, a triple and eight RBI to lead the Bulldogs to a series sweep over Coker over the weekend.  He posted multiple hits in two of the three games he played in, including multiple RBI in all three contests.  Spitz highlighted his series with three hits, a triple, a homer and four RBI in the series-opening game on Feb. 13.  He slugged 1.214 against the Cobras and posted an on-base percentage of .529.  In the field, he posted 11 putouts on 11 chances from his spot in the outfield.  The honor marks his first Player of the Week selection this season.

Apicella, a junior from Dillsburg, Pa., struck out 13 Brevard hitters in a complete game win over the Tornados on Feb. 14.  He scattered a pair of hits in the outing and allowed just one run.  The honor is his second-straight Pitcher of the Week plaudit this season.

Also nominated for Baseball Player of the Week: Kyle Bailey (Anderson), Christian Dix (Brevard), Brandon Roberts (Carson-Newman) and Albert Baur (Newberry).

Also nominated for Baseball Pitcher of the Week: David Thompson (Anderson), Tyler Konzen (Brevard), Robert Westenrieder (Newberry) and Hunter Hamilton (Wingate).
