Westmont, Ill.----Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette has honored junior place kicker/punter Chris Brewer (Weddington, N.C./Sun Valley HS) as this week's NCAA Division II special teams "player of the week." Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette has recognized Brewer five times this season.
The South Atlantic Conference special teams "player of the week," Brewer wins the national honor for the fifth time in the past seven weeks. Brewer was also honored as an honorable mention D2Football.com special teams "player of the week" on Monday.
Chris Brewer hit a school-record 89-yard punt as the Bulldogs defeated South Atlantic Conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne 38-14 at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on Saturday afternoon. He added a field goal and three extra points against the Bears.
Brewer had eight punts for a 43.6 yard-per-punt average in the L-R win. Brewer had two punts inside the 20. Thanks in large part to his stellar kicking and punting, Lenoir-Rhyne's average field position for the day was the LRC 25-yard-line (in comparison, Wingate's AFP was the WU 44-yard-line).
Lenoir-Rhyne returned only one of his punts (for eight yards). The Bears returned only three of his seven kick-offs (one of those for a negative one yard). Brewer recorded three touchbacks and hit another kick-off out of bounds.
Brewer leads the South Atlantic Conference with 15 punts inside
the 20. He is averaging 43.1 yards per punt in 2003. In addition to
leading the SAC in punts inside the 20, Brewer leads the league in
kick scoring. Brewer has 40 points (seven-of-eight field goals and
19-of-20 extra points) in six games this season.
