Wingate’s Hailstock and Brewer Earn National Football Honors
Westmont, Ill.---- Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette has honored two Wingate University football student-athletes by naming them national "players of the week." Wingate junior running back Antonio Hailstock (Greenville, S.C.) was named offensive "player of the week," while Chris Brewer (Weddington, N.C.) was named special teams "player of the week."
Hailstock and Brewer helped the Bulldogs top NCAA I-AA Davidson 22-10 on Saturday night. With the win, Wingate is 14-4 lifetime in season openers. The Bulldogs have won three season openers in a row and nine of their last 10.
Offense
A 5-11, 225 junior running back from Greenville, S.C., Hailstock
rushed for a career-high 192 yards on 34 attempts. The bulk of the
yardage from the J.L. Mann High School graduate came in the second
half as he carried the ball 22 times for 147 yards. He scored the
first Bulldog touchdown on a 61-yard screen pass and finished with
three receptions for 82 yards.
Special Teams
A 6-0, 215, junior kicker from Weddington, N.C., Brewer averaged 43
yards on six punts and kicked a pair of field goals in Saturday's
win. The Sun Valley High School product connected on a pair of
29-yard field goals and added two extra points in the win. He had a
long punt of 65 yards.
Brewer has handled Wingate's kick-offs for three seasons. He
kicks the ball into the end zone on a regular basis, keeping the
other team at bay. On Saturday night, Davidson managed only one
kick-off return for 21 yards.
