Wingate’s Barrett, Newberry’s Newell, Lenoir-Rhyne’s Corpe Named Football Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The South Atlantic Conference Football Players of the Week have been announced for the week ending Sep. 27, 2008. Wingate wide receiver Shawn Barrett was named the SAC Offensive Player of the Week, while Newberry linebacker Will Newell was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. Lenoir-Rhyne placekicker Colin Corpe was named the SAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Barrett, a 6-4, 215-pound senior from Andover, N.J., caught a career-high three touchdown passes as Wingate defeated Tusculum 37-33 in this year's league opener. Barrett hauled in the game-winner with 9:06 remaining and the Wingate defense made a red-zone stop as time expired as the Bulldogs remained undefeated on the year.

Newell, a 6-2, 255-pound senior from Irmo, S.C., recorded 14 tackles in Newberry's 27-21 overtime win over 11th-ranked Carson-Newman. Newell finished with four solo stops, forced a fumble, broke up a pass and accounted for a quarterback hurry. Newell is seventh all-time in total tackles at Newberry (287).
Corpe, a 6-2, 180-pound freshman from Ocala, Fla., tied a school record with four field goals in Lenoir-Rhyne's 40-14 win at Brevard. Corpe was perfect on his four field goal attempts, while going 2-for-3 on extra points for his 14 points.
The South Atlantic Conference Football Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
