Former Lenoir-Rhyne Football Standout Perry Fewell Named Coach Of Buffalo Bills
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Former Lenoir-Rhyne University football player Perry Fewell was named interim Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. Fewell was a four-year letterman for the Bears from 1980-1983 as a linebacker. After a 3-6 start, the Bills parted ways with head coach Dick Jauron. Fewell was named interim head coach after serving as Buffalo's Defensive Coordinator.
Fewell is in his 12th season in the National Football League and is in his fourth season with the Bills. He becomes the first-ever Lenoir-Rhyne graduate to earn a head coaching position for an NFL franchise.
The former L-R linebacker spent the majority of his time in the NFL as a defensive backs coach and has coached five different players to Pro Bowl appearances.
Fewell is the second L-R graduate currently coaching in the NFL. Mike Pope is in his 10th year as an assistant coach for the New York Giants and garnered national media attention in 2008 when helped to lead the Giants to a victory in Super Bowl XLII. Pope has been a part of three Super Bowl Champions with the Giants.
At Lenoir-Rhyne, Fewell was named the team's most improved player in 1983. He attended South Point High School in Belmont, N.C., and was inducted into the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Fewell earned his bachelor's degree from L-R in 1985.
