beat Tusculum 70-35 last year in Jefferson City, Tenn.
Game Notes: After starting the conference schedule
0-4, the Tusculum Pioneers have won back-to-back games, including
last week's 54-44 victory over then SAC co-leader Catawba.
Carson-Newman dropped a 52-14 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne in the
Eagles' home finale. The Eagles can still claim a share of the
South Atlantic Conference title with a win this week and a Wingate
loss at Newberry. Tusculum rattled off 638 yards offensively last
week against Catawba, including a school record 542 yards (510
pass, 32 rush) by sophomore quarterback Bo Cordell, who accounted
for five touchdowns on the day (3 pass, 2 rush). This week will be
the 40th recorded meeting between Tusculum and Carson-Newman in a
series that began in 1904, making it the second oldest collegiate
football rivalry in the State of Tennessee. Tusculum defeated C-N,
45-44, in the teams' last meeting at Pioneer Field in 2008.

The Series: Mars Hill leads, 10-5-2
Last meeting: Last season, Mars Hill handed the
Tornados their first home loss of the season, defeating Brevard
28-13 in Brevard Memorial Stadium.
Game Notes: Mars Hill is coming off a 48-29 loss
to Wingate. Luis Cruz and P.J. Gore set new school records as Cruz
set a new school single game passing record, while Gore broke the
1,000 receiving yard mark on the season. Jonas Randolph rushed 23
times for 140 yards and a pair of scores. Brevard is coming off a
31-3 loss to Newberry. Kelvin Jeter broke the 1,000 rushing mark
for the season, becoming the first Tornado running back to eclipse
the mark in a single season in modern program history, picking up
90 yards on 18 carries. This will be the 18th meeting all-time
between the two teams, with Mars Hill holding the 10-5-2 advantage,
including wins in all four meetings since the Tornados reinstated
their football program back in 2006. Brevard comes into this
weekend's contest as the NCAA's fourth-best rushing attack,
averaging 289.2 yards per game on the ground, let by the Jeter, as
the freshman slot leads the Tornados with 1,020 rushing yards on
the season, averaging 8.3 yards per carry. Jonas Randolph headlines
the Lions offense and leads both Mars Hill and the South Atlantic
Conference on the season with 1,264 rushing yards on the year,
averaging 126.4 yards per game and 13 rushing touchdowns. Randolph
is also ninth in the NCAA Division II in rushing yards per game and
was named a candidate for the Harlon Hill Award.

Lenoir-Rhyne is once again the top rushing team in NCAA Division
II, averaging 314.5 yards per contest. L-R leads the South Atlantic
Conference in rushing defense (79.7 ypg), passing defense (191.5
ypg), total defense (271.2 ypg), scoring defense (20.6 ppg) and
quarterback sacks (36). Junior quarterback Major Herron needs 136
yards to become the first Bear to rush for over 1,000 yards in a
season since Andrew Tudor (1,181) in 2004. Lenoir-Rhyne's James
Pone rushed for 144 yards against Carson-Newman and was named the
SAC Offensive Player of the Week. Strong safety Carl Brooks was
named the Defensive Player of the Week after recording eight
tackles, including two for a loss, and an interception. Catawba's
LJ McCray was named the Special Teams Player of the Week after he
returned two kickoffs for touchdowns against Tusculum and set a
Division II record with 304 return yards.

Game Notes: Wingate can wrap up its first South Atlantic Conference
football championship with a win over Newberry. Wingate is the
number three team in the Super Regional Two top 10 poll. Newberry
snapped a three-game losing streak with a 31-3 victory over the
Brevard College Tornados last week. Wingate quarterback Cody Haffly
is a Harlon Hill Award candidate. He is completing 63 percent of
his passes this season. The school record for a season is 58
percent. He is 206-of-327 for 2887 yards and 27 touchdowns. Perry
Floyd has set Wingate's school record for all-purpose yards in a
season. He has 1713 all-purpose yards this year. Kicker RP Lopez is
a perfect 8-of-8 on field goal attempts with a long of 41, and is
also 34-of-34 on PATs. Robert Fletcher is a defensive leader with
77 tackles and two interceptions. Newberry has won five straight
games overall in the series. Wingate's last win over Newberry came
in 2004, a 39-34 victory at home. Newberry wide receiver David
Pressley needs just 44 yards to break Tymere Zimmerman's school
record for receiving yards in a season and just 66 yards to get to
1,000 yards for this season.
