WACO, Texas – Wingate wide receiver Chris Bowden and Carson-Newman offensive lineman Kevin Day have been named All-Americans by the American Football Coaches Association, it was announced on Monday.
The AFCA has released an All-America team each year since 1945. It is the only All-America team in Division II selected entirely by coaches.
Bowden had a record-breaking year for Wingate, finishing with 106 catches for 1,359 yards – the second-highest single-season yardage total in SAC history. The senior's average of 9.64 receptions and 123.55 yards per game ranked tied for second and third, respectively, in Division II.
Bowden finished his Wingate career with 263 receptions and 3,719 yards, both of which are all-time SAC records. The Harlon Hill Trophy top-eight finalist and BSN All-American was also named the SAC co-Offensive Player of the Year last month.
Day, meanwhile, anchored a dominant offensive line for Carson-Newman, which reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Division II Football Championship. Behind Day, the Eagles led the nation in rushing offense, averaging 378.6 yards per game. They also scored a SAC-best 52 touchdowns on the ground.
In addition to earning AFCA All-America honors, Day was a Daktronics All-Region selection and the co-recipient of the SAC Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which recognizes the conference's top offensive lineman.
