SAC Football Lands Three on Daktronics All-America Team
Catawba linebacker Cory Johnson, Carson-Newman offensive lineman Kevin Day and Wingate wide receiver Chris Bowden have been selected to the 2012 Daktronics All-America Football Team, it was announced on Wednesday.
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Catawba linebacker Cory Johnson, Carson-Newman offensive lineman Kevin Day and Wingate wide receiver Chris Bowden have been selected to the 2012 Daktronics All-America Football Team, it was announced on Wednesday.
Johnson, the co-SAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, earned first-team All-America honors from Daktronics. He led the conference with 130 tackles, recorded five tackles for loss and forced two fumbles this season.
Johnson was also named an All-American by Beyond Sports Network last week.
Bowden, a member of the Second Team, finished the season with 106 receptions for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns – the second-highest single-season yardage total in SAC history. His final average of 9.64 receptions per game ranked second in Division II and his 123.55 yards per game ranked third.
In addition to his Daktronics All-America selection, Bowden was named the 2012 co-SAC Offensive Player of the Year, a first-team All-American by the AFCA and BSN, and a top-eight finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy.
Day earned second-team All-America honors from Daktronics as well after anchoring a Carson-Newman offense that led the nation in rushing in 2012. Behind Day, the Eagles averaged 378.6 yards per game on the ground and scored 52 rushing touchdowns.
Day, the co-recipient of the SAC Jacobs Blocking Trophy, was also named a first-team All-American by the AFCA.
