Newberry’s Murden, Brevard’s McCleery, Lenoir-Rhyne’s Green Earn Weekly SAC Football Honors
Newberry quarterback W.T. Murden, Brevard defensive back Jacob McCleery and Lenoir-Rhyne punt returner Michael Green have been named the week six SAC Football Players of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Newberry quarterback W.T. Murden, Brevard defensive back Jacob McCleery and Lenoir-Rhyne punt returner Michael Green have been named the week six SAC Football Players of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
SAC Football Offensive Player of the Week | W.T. Murden, Newberry QB
Murden accounted for 203 total yards on Saturday as Newberry handled Tusculum, 44-9, to start 6-0 for just the second time in program history. He completed 9-of-14 passes for 116 yards, including touchdown throws of two and a career-long 68 yards.
The junior also piled up 87 rushing yards on 12 carries, one of which was a career-long 46-yard touchdown run on the game's opening drive.
Murden currently ranks fifth in the SAC with an average of 172.2 passing yards per game. He is also average 36 rushing yards per game.
SAC Football Defensive Player of the Week | Jacob McCleery, Brevard DB
McCleery helped lead a dominant Brevard defense in Saturday's 35-7 win over Mars Hill, which marked BC's largest margin of victory in a SAC game since joining the conference in 2008. With the Tornados leading 7-0 early in the third quarter, McCleery returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown – the first of four-unanswered BC touchdowns in the second half.
McCleery also finished the game with six tackles. On the season, he has 23 tackles to go along with a pair of interceptions.
SAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week | Michael Green, Lenoir-Rhyne PR
In a key southeast region matchup with North Greenville, Green returned a second-quarter punt 33 yards, setting up Lenoir-Rhyne's third touchdown in an eventual 35-17 victory. It was the senior's longest punt return of the season. He also had another return of nine yards in the game.
Green's average of 7.8 yards per punt return this season ranks second in the conference.
