INDIANAPOLIS – Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry remain the top two teams in the NCAA Division II Football southeast region rankings, while Carson-Newman dropped a spot to No. 8, it was announced on Monday.
Lenoir-Rhyne once again claimed the No. 1 ranking in the poll after the Bears won in dominant fashion over Carson-Newman on Saturday, 37-3. The victory clinched at least a share of the SAC title for L-R, which has won eight-straight games after a week-one loss.
Newberry also stayed put at No. 2 following its win over Brevard last weekend. The Wolves are 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the SAC, and are still alive for a share of the SAC championship.
Despite its setback to Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, Carson-Newman dropped only one spot in the poll. The Eagles are 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
In addition to the NCAA regional rankings, Lenoir-Rhyne was ranked 18th, Newberry 21st and Carson-Newman tied for 25th in Monday's AFCA national poll. Newberry and Carson-Newman face each other on Saturday in another top-25 showdown in the SAC, while L-R will step out of conference to face Alderson-Broaddus.
The NCAA regional rankings are the official poll utilized by the NCAA Division II Football Committee during the championship selection process.
