Liberty, Mo.----Wingate University football redshirt freshman punter Chandler Phillips (Lutz, Fla.) is the d2football.com Special Teams Player of the Week, officials announced Thursday night. Thanks to his pinpoint punting, Phillips helped the Bulldogs earn a 30-19 South Atlantic Conference home victory over Catawba Saturday.
The SAC Special Teams Player of the Week, Phillips booted five punts inside the Catawba 10-yard line Saturday. Three of the five punts occurred in the fourth quarter as Wingate was protecting a one-touchdown lead. His eight punts (for 274 yards) are a career-high.
"During the last two weeks, Chandler has worked very hard," Wingate head coach Joe Reich says. "As a team and coaching staff, we've given situational punting a high priority. It is amazing how much Chandler has improved on his situational punting since the start of the season."
Two of Phillips' fourth-quarter punts led to Bulldog safeties. Wingate's average field position Saturday was the Wingate 46-yard line. Conversely, Catawba's average field position was the Catawba 26-yard line. His 2014 season statistics ledger includes 25 punts for 889 yards (35.6 yards per punt) with two touchbacks, three fair catches and 10 punts inside the 20.
