South Atlantic Conference Announces Football Players of the Week, Sept. 12 (Video)
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games played the second week of the season. Wingate running back Lawrence Pittman and Newberry quarterback Raleigh Yeldell were tabbed the Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Mars Hill linebacker Ricky Hawks was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Carson-Newman return man Kevin Snead picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Pittman, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., posted a school-record five touchdowns to go along with 137 yards on the ground as Wingate defeated Shaw 56-7 on Sept. 10. He carried the ball 20 times to finish with an average of 6.9 yards per carry. Pittman also chipped in one reception for 22 yards. The honor is his second Offensive Player of the Week nod this season.
Yeldell, a senior from Edgefield, S.C., completed 84 percent of his passes and finished with 289 yards through the air to lead the Wolves to a 42-22 win over Virginia Union on Sept. 10. He connected on 27 of 32 of his attempts, including a pair of touchdown strikes. He guided the Newberry offense to touchdowns on six of seven drives as he chipped in 11 rushes for 30 yards. Over a span of the contest, Yeldell connected on 10-straight passes. The award is his first Offensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Hawks, a senior from Orlando, Fla., came away with 12 tackles and one tackle for loss in Mars Hill's 28-21 overtime win over Shorter on Sept. 10. Seven of his tackles were solo efforts as he added one pass break-up and a pair of quarterback hurries. His two hurries came on Shorter's final possession of the contest. The honor is his first Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Snead, a senior from Richmond, Va., returned a St. Augustine's kickoff 90 yards for a score as Carson-Newman posted a 48-14 win on Sept. 10. Arguably the fastest player in college football, he returned a pair of kicks in the contest to finish with 111 yards and an average of 55.5 yards per return. The award marks his first Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season.
