The South Atlantic Conference Announces WePlayed Sports Football Players of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its WePlayed Sports Football Players of the Week for games played during week five of the 2023 season.  Lenoir-Rhyne running back Dwayne McGee was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week, while Carson-Newman linebacker Mekhi Brown was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Catawba kicker Bryson Sims picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors. 

McGee, a junior from Kissimmee, Fla., led the No. 14/15 Bears to a dominating 56-3 win over UVA Wise. He rushed for 201 yards on 17 carries, averaging 11.8 yards per carry with three touchdowns. In two of McGee's touchdown runs he broke free for big yards with a 52-yard touchdown run and a 44-yard touchdown run.

Brown, a sophomore from Wauchula, Fla., led the Eagles to a 34-21 win over Newberry on the road last week. He had four tackles, including one for loss with a blocked kick and an interception that he returned 13-yards for a touchdown. His interception was the first of his career returned for a TD.

Sims, a sophomore from Thomasville, N.C., accounted for 12 of the Catawba Indians 30 points in their 30-13 win over Emory & Henry. He was perfect on field goals, going 3-for-3 with 32, 40, and 44-yard field goals. He also was perfect on extra points, going 3-for-3, as well.
