SAC Announces WePlayed Football Players of the Week for Week Zero
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its WePlayed Football Players of the Week for games played during week zero of the 2024 season. Emory & Henry's Cam Peoples was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Wingate's Jaquan Edwards was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Carson-Newman's Fortune Woods was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Peoples, a junior from Reidsville, N.C., found the end zone twice for the Wasps in a 38-7 win over Glenville State in the season opener. He finished the game with three grabs for 83 yards and two touchdowns – including one that spanned 54 yards – and added two carries for 14 yards in the rushing game.
Edwards, a senior from Johnston, S.C., clinched Wingate's 17-12 win over UNC Pembroke with an interception as the Braves were driving to try to win the game late in the fourth quarter. Edwards finished the game with four total tackles, one tackle for loss and added a half-a-sack to go along with his INT that he returned 11 yards.
Woods, a junior from Hammond, Ind., had a blocked punt recovery in the end zone that resulted in Carson-Newman's first points of the game and the first touchdown of the 2024 SAC season. It was the 13th such blocked punt return for a touchdown in Carson-Newman history and the first since 2021.
