Final WePlayed Sports Football Players of the Week Announced
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its WePlayed Football Players of the Week for games played during the final week of the 2024 regular season. Emory & Henry's Cam Abshire and Wingate's Kai Russell were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, while Wingate's Caleb Bonesteel was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Abshire, a sophomore from Roanoke, Va., led Emory & Henry to a 27-7 win over Newberry on Saturday by finding the end zone twice. Abshire had eight grabs for 158 yards and the two scores. Each of his touchdowns came in the second quarter and were just 1:46 apart. Thanks to his efforts, Emory & Henry finished the season with nine wins.
Russell, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., led a dominant defensive effort for Wingate in the SAC Championship victory over Carson-Newman. Russell and the Wingate defense held No. 19 Carson-Newman to just 84 total yards in the win. Russell had 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
Bonesteel, a junior from Dawsonville, Ga., was named the Most Outstanding Player of the SAC Championship as he went a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals in a 28-13 win over Carson-Newman. Bonesteel connected on two from 40+ yards, including a 48-yarder that was a career best. He also buried his extra point attempt to account for 16 points in the game. This is the third straight week Wingate has brought home Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
