Newberry’s Debola Ogunseye named Men’s Soccer Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Newberry College sophomore midfielder/forward Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) is this week's South Atlantic Conference men's soccer Player of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
Ogunseye exploded offensively last week, earning 14 points (six goals, two assists) in two Newberry victories. His productivity was equally distributed between the two matches, as he tallied three goals and one assist in each win.
Ogunseye scored the game-winner in the eighth minute against Catawba College, as Newberry blanked the Catawba Indians 5-0 Wednesday. He followed with goals in the 59th and 63rd minutes for his first collegiate hat trick. Ogunseye assisted Ben Mottel on the final goal, as Newberry picked up the program's first-ever victory over Catawba.
He recorded the first back-to-back hat tricks in Newberry history in a 4-3 non-conference win over Pfeiffer University Friday. In addition to his three goals, Ogunseye flicked on a corner kick in the 90th minute that Philip Tanner buried with 10.5 seconds left on clock to win the match.
The Indians (8-4 overall, 3-1 SAC) have won three matches in a row.
The SAC Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
