TOWSON, Md. - Wingate University sophomore defender Cameron Burrows has been selected to the 2013 Capital One Men's Soccer Academic All-America NCAA Division II Third Team, as selected by CoSIDA. A Marketing major with a perfect 4.00 GPA, Burrows earns Capital One Academic All-America honors for the first time in his career.
In October, Burrows was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III team. The Capital One Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 D-II Academic All-America teams program.
"We are very happy for Cam to be recognized for his efforts both in the classroom and on the field," Wingate head men's soccer coach Gary Hamill says. "For a sophomore to receive Capital One Academic All-America honors is a massive accomplishment for him personally and for our program."
Burrows is the only sophomore among 33 student-athletes recognized as Capital One Academic All-America team members. One of only three Bulldogs to start 17 of 17 matches, Burrows helped Wingate compile an 11-5-1 overall record and a 7-2-1 ledger in the South Atlantic Conference this season. The Bulldogs claimed second place in the SAC regular season standings.
Thanks to the efforts of Burrows and his teammates, the Bulldog defense held opponents to 1.03 goals per game this season. The Wingate defense limited the opposition to 9.6 shots per contest. The Bulldogs held opponents to a league-low 0.86 goals during conference games. Wingate had seven shutouts on the season. Burrows posted an assist in Wingate's season-opening 3-0 victory over Barton.
In 2012, Burrows started 12 of 17 matches as a true freshman. Wingate won its first-ever NCAA Division II Southeast Region title last season. The Bulldogs lost in the Elite Eight to eventual national champion Lynn (Fla.).
Burrows is the only SAC student-athlete to earn Capital One Academic All-America men's soccer laurels this year. Four players with Southeast Region ties received Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division II men's soccer recognition. Limestone senior defender Mark Mitchell (Glasgow, Scotland) and Young Harris junior forward Ilija Ilic (Belgrade, Serbia) are first team members, while UNC Pembroke junior forward Sam Miles (Christchurch, New Zealand) joins Burrows as a third team member.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports. For more information about the Academic All-America Teams program, please visit www.cosida.com.
