The South Atlantic Conference Announces 2023 Men's Soccer Award Winners and All-Conference
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Lincoln Memorial forward Daniel Burko was voted as the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year, while Wingate defender Pedro Santos was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Year, and Wingate forward Pablo Pozos was named the SAC Freshman of the Year. Wingate head coach Gary Hamill was voted as the Coach of the Year, the conference announced today.
Burko, a sophomore from Lovenstad, Norway, was the top offensive threat in the SAC this season with 18 goals and three assists for 39 points. He is ranked second in the nation in goals and fourth in points. He scored six game-winning goals this season for the Railsplitters and was named the WePlayed Sports Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week once this season.
Santos, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, anchored a Wingate defense that allowed just seven goals in conference play this season. In addition to his defense, Santos scored two goals, both game-winners, and had two assists on the year. He was named WePlayed Sports Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week once this season.
Pozos, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, led the Bulldogs in scoring this season with nine goals, five assists, and a team-best 23 points. He is ranked third in the league in goals and fifth in points. He scored three game-winning goals this season and was twice named WePlayed Sports Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Hamill earns his tenth SAC Coach of the Year honor after leading the Bulldogs to an 11-3-2 overall record, going 10-1-1 in the SAC, and earning the program's tenth SAC Regular Season Championship. His Bulldogs were fourth in the league in scoring with 29 goals and 80 points, and they allowed just 16 goals on the defensive side of the ball.
Joining Burko, Pozos, and Santos on the All-SAC First Team were forwards Peter Plougmand of Mars Hill, and Claudel N'Goubou of Limestone.
The first team midfielders were Bilal Camara of Limestone, Celestin Blondel of Coker, Ruben Carvlho of Limestone, and Kriton Kiousis of Lincoln Memorial.
On defense, Owen Marshall of Wingate, Stefan Roeb of Limestone, and Ivan Rubio of Lenior-Rhyne were named to the first team.
Wingate's Aleksa Janjic was named the first team goalkeeper.
