The South Atlantic Conference Announces WePlayed Sports Swimmers of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its WePlayed Sports Swimmers of the Week for meets competed in during the fourth week of the 2023-24 season. Mars Hill's Maria Jose Orozco was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week while Wingate's Manoel Silva was named the Men's Swimmer of the Week.
Jose Orozco, a freshman from California Hot Springs, Colombia, collected two individual first-place and two individual second-place finishes in Mars Hill's two home meets this week. In the contest versus Carson-Newman, she set a new school record, winning the 100 Butterfly with a time of 58.14. She also finished second in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:18.85. In the tri-meet versus King and Lees-McRae, Jose Orozco touched the wall first in the 200 Butterfly (2:15.72) and notched a second-place finish in the 50 Freestyle (25.00).
Silva, a freshman from Camaçari, Brazil, contributed to four victories as No. 8 Wingate won 14-of-14 events on the way to a 222-34 SAC road victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. Individually, Silva touched first in the 50 Freestyle (21.01), the 100 Freestyle (46.64), and the 50 Butterfly (23.11). He swam the first leg in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:24.98) to secure his fourth victory of the week. Silva has won eight races in his last two meets, as he won four events against Chowan on October 21.
