Newberry Names Felipe Sobrinho As Head Men’s Tennis Coach
NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College Director of Athletics Brad Edwards announced the hiring of Felipe Sobrinho as head men's tennis coach.
"I'm glad I've joined the coaching ranks here at Newberry," Sobrinho said. "I'm committed to building and upgrading this program to take it to the next step to win regional and national titles."
Sobrinho arrives with a strong familiarity with the Newberry men's team, as Sobrinho played for the scarlet and gray from 2006 to 2009. Sobrinho will also bring quality tennis professional and coaching experience to a Newberry squad that finished third in the South Atlantic Conference in 2008-2009.
In addition to playing at Newberry, Sobrinho spent several summers accruing tennis teaching experience at the Future Stars Summer Camps in New York. Sobrinho served as tennis director of the Future Stars Summer Camp at SUNY College at Old Westbury Country Club in Long Island in the summer of 2009. In 2007 and 2008, Sobrinho worked as a tennis instructor at the Future Stars camps at Purchase College and Old Westbury.
Sobrinho has also worked at Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase,
N.Y., and Glen Oaks Country Club in Old Westbury, N.Y.
While at Newberry, Sobrinho enjoyed one of the most productive careers in recent men's tennis program history. Sobrinho earned all-South Atlantic Conference honors in 2008 and 2009 and compiled a 26-15 singles record in his time as a member of the scarlet and gray.
Sobrinho graduated from Newberry in 2009, majoring in Physical Education. He currently resides in Newberry.
