SUMTER, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The No. 18 Queens University of Charlotte Royals are the 2022 SAC Men's Tennis Tournament Champions after coming from behind to defeat the No. 30 Wingate Bulldogs, 4-1, on Saturday (April 23).
Wingate took the early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles points with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The Royals bounced back from the doubles defeat with wins at No. 2 singles by Edoardo Cecere (6-3, 6-1) and No. 6 singles by Yoan Roussinov (6-1, 6-1) to take a 2-1 lead.
Queens continued to apply the pressure with a 6-4, 6-2 with by Win Steveker at No. 3 singles, extending the lead to 3-1.
Queens' Laurenz Blickwede clinched the match and the title at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory. In addition to clinching the match, Blickwede was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
In addition to the tournament title, the Royals earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Regional Championship.
