Wingate, Newberry, Carson-Newman Women’s Basketball Teams Earn NCAA Tournament Berths
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Three South Atlantic Conference women's basketball teams can begin their quest for a national championship, having earned berths into the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball national tournament.
SAC regular-season champion Wingate (23-6) will be the third seed in the South Atlantic Region tournament, which will be held in Morrow, Ga., on the campus of Clayton State. Wingate will face sixth-seed Georgia College & State.
Food Lion SAC Tournament champion Newberry (24-6) earned the automatic bid and are making their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Indians are the seventh seed and will face second-seed North Carolina Central.
Carson-Newman College (21-9) earned the eighth seed and will face the region's top seed, Clayton State.
The other teams in the women's South Atlantic Region tournament are fourth-seed Elizabeth City State and fifth-seed Columbus State.
The region tournament winners will advance to the Elite Eight, which will be held in Kearney, Neb., March 21, 22 and 24.
Game times for the region tournament will be announced Monday.
