Wingate’s Anna Atkinson Named Women’s Basketball Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Wingate University's Anna Atkinson has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by league officials today.
Atkinson, a senior guard from Marion, N.C., led the Bulldogs to three key regional victories last week, as WU defeated Anderson, Armstrong Atlantic State and Columbus State.
On the week, Atkinson averaged 15.7 points per game, 6.0 assists per game, 3.3 rebounds per game and 3.3 steals per game. Against Columbus State, Atkinson contributed 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Wingate led 44-25 at intermission.
Against Armstrong Atlantic State, Atkinson helped Wingate take a
42-19 halftime time lead en route to the road victory. The 2008
All-American led the way for the Bulldogs with 19 points, seven
assists, four rebounds and four steals.
In the Anderson contest, Atkinson had 16 points, eight assists, four steals and two rebounds as Wingate collected an 84-77 victory. On the season, Atkinson is averaging 15.8 points per game and 6.1 assists per game. Her assist-to-turnover ratio is a sterling 2.9.
Wingate is now 8-2 on the season and is ranked 25th nationally in the WBCA/USA Today/ESPN Division II coaches' poll.
The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors of the league.
