BREVARD - The Tornados went 1-2 this week ... On Monday the Tornados defeated Truett-McConnell 101-59, the first time since the 2003 season that the Tornados scored over 100 points in a game ... Fourteen players scored for Brevard led by Samantha Winn with fourteen points, six steals, and six rebounds in just 20 minutes of play ... Brevard shot 51.4 percent from the field and 52.4 percent from three point range ... They lost at Catawba on Wednesday by a score of 78-68 in a game that saw ten lead changes and nine ties ... Samantha Winn led the Tornados in scoring for the fourteenth time this season with 20 points followed by a career high 15 points from Lindsay Brendle ... Brendle also led the team in scoring on Saturday with 11 points followed by Anna Schlobohm with 10 in their 82-56 loss at Wingate ... Kelly Hudler came off the bench scoring scoring seven points while notching three steals and a blocked shot in just 12 total minutes of play ... Brevard will play Carson-Newman at home on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
CARSON-NEWMAN - No. 10 Carson-Newman picked up two wins last week to move to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in South Atlantic Conference play ... The Lady Eagles remain one of eight teams in NCAA Division II that are undefeated ... C-N beat Wingate by a 78-68 score on Wednesday at home before soaring past rival Tusculum, 90-77, on the road Saturday ... The Lady Eagles used two back-to-back runs in the second half to push their lead over the Bulldogs to 17 points on Wednesday to come away with the 78-68 victory ... Senior forward Shari Buford registered game-highs in points (16), rebounds (13) and blocks (three) for her fourth double-double in six games ... Senior guard Ashley Kyle had 12 points and moved into fifth-place in school history with eight assists while junior guard Mandy Mendenhall had 14 points ... C-N shot 30-for-58 (51.7%) from the field and hit seven-of-11 attempts from behind the arc ... On Saturday, Carson-Newman led by at least 20 points for more than six minutes in the second half, defeating Tusculum on their home court, 90-77 ... Mendenhall led all scorers with a season-high 26 points and added eight rebounds, seven steals and three assists ... Buford went to the well again and came back with her fifth double-double in seven contests with 15 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks while Kyle had 17 points and five assists ... The Lady Eagles continued their attack from outside, hitting at least four treys for the sixth-straight contest ... C-N forced 28 Pioneer miscues with 19 steals and outscored TC 33-17 in points off turnovers ... Carson-Newman will return to action Wednesday when it travels to Brevard to play away from home for the 10th time in 12 games for a 6:00 p.m. contest ... The Lady Eagles will conclude the week, facing defending SAC Regular Season and Food Lion SAC Tournament Champion, Lenoir-Rhyne, on Saturday at Holt Fieldhouse at 6:00 p.m.
CATAWBA - The Catawba women collected two wins last week ... The Lady Indians started with a 78-68 win over Brevard then eked out a 76-75 victory at Mars Hill ... Dana Hicks recorded double-doubles in both wins ... She had 13 poitns and 14 rebounds vs. Brevard and posted a season-high 27 points and a career-equaling 16 rebounds at Mars Hill ... Brooke Whitley provided the spark against Brevard ... She came off the bench to score 22 points, 20 in the seconds half, to lead the Lady Indians ... Brevard never retook the lead after Whitley canned a three-pointer for a 41-39 lead with 13:12 left then the senior added two more from behind the arc for a 55-49 edge with 8:06 to play ... Her final three-pointer gave Catawba a double-digit margin with 2:46 remaining ... The Lady Indians dominated the glass, holding a 49-27 edge on the boards ... Catawba fell behind 13-2 at the outset against Mars Hill then ralled to hold its own 11-point edge in the opening half ... The Lady Indians led by four at the break and was able to hold on despite shooting just 30 percent in the second half ... Nisha Long canned four three-pointers, all in the second half when she totaled 15 of her 18 points ... She twice gave Catawba leads from long range in the final seven minutes ... Hicks provided the winning points on a stick back with 1:06 left for the 76-75 edge ... Mars Hill missed several shots in the final minutes, but Kisha Long came up with a steal in the waning seconds to secure the victory ... The Lady Indians had a big edge at the line, making 18-of-25 to just 7-for-9 for Mars Hill ... Catawba will host both league games this week against Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday and Newberry on Saturday.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's basketball team (12-4, 5-1) won both its South Atlantic Conference games last week at home over Mars Hill (79-59) and Lincoln Memorial (91-74) on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively … Against the Lady Lions, senior guard Brittany Mitch (McLean, Va.) tallied a double-double (13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds) while senior center Jacquelyn Kremer (Sevierville, Tenn. ) came off the bench to score 11 points as the Bears held a 55-37 advantage on the boards in defeating Mars Hill for the ninth straight time … Sophomore guard Cameron Sealey (Gastonia, N.C.) tallied a team-high 20 points and was one of four players to score in double figures in Lenoir-Rhyne's win over Lincoln Memorial … Senior guard Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior guard LaCourtney Rann (Charlotte, N.C.) added 19 and 18 points, respectively, as L-R once again had the upper hand in total rebounds (50-30) en route to the win … Lenoir-Rhyne is 6-0 at home this year and has won 12 straight South Atlantic Conference Regular Season games at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium … L-R is also 39-9 overall and 18-4 in league play since the start of last year … Holt remains sixth on Lenoir-Rhyne's all-time scoring list with 1,349 points and third in assists with 367 … Senior center Denise Moore (Newport News, Va.) and senior guard Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C.) are looking to become the 15th and 16th players in school history to cross the 1,000-point mark in their careers … Moore has 954 points while Safrit has 948 … The Bears have seven players averaging at least eight points or better in 2009-10 … Lenoir-Rhyne does not play again until Saturday when it travels to Carson-Newman to face the undefeated and tenth-ranked Eagles (15-0, 5-0) in Jefferson City, Tenn., beginning at 6 p.m. … Carson-Newman leads the all-time series with Lenoir-Rhyne, 32-18, but the Bears won both contests between the two schools last year.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - LMU faced Newberry Wednesday night … LMU has not beaten Newberry since 1993 … LMU tied the game at the 11:36 mark on a jumper by Carolyn Mills … From there, LMU and Newberry went toe-to-toe for the remainder of the game with Newberry leading most of the way … LMU had not one but two 3-point opportunities to tie the game and send it into overtime, but both of sophomore guard Amberly O'Dells' last-second 3's were off the mark … LMU fell to Newberry 64-61 … Mills came off the bench to lead the Lady Railsplitters in scoring with 24 points on 7-15 shooting from the field and by hitting 9-9 shots from the free throw line … Teammate Dayshalee Salaman added 12 points in the effort, six of which came from the charity stripe … Junior center Blandine Kikwiki Mamuku took top rebounding honors for the night by pulling 13 boards … Next up was a trip to Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday … L-R leads the series 4-2 but both of LMU's wins have come in Hickory … A first-half run by L-R was too much for LMU to overcome as they fell 91-74 … Carolyn Mills led all scorers with 25 points and finished with a double-double by pulling a game-high 10 rebounds … Blandine Kikwiki Mamuku put in 14 points … Dayshalee Salaman had 12 points … Amberly O'Dell and Destiny Williams each added 10 … The Lady Railsplitters are now 4-11 overall and 2-4 in South Atlantic Conference play … They visit Catawba College on Wednesday … Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
MARS HILL - Mars Hill went 0-2 during the previous week of play against Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba. The Lions are now 4-12 overall and 1-4 in the SAC ... The Lenoir-Rhyne women's basketball team knocked off Mars Hill, 79-59, at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium ... The Bears only trailed once at 5-4, just over two minutes into the contest and were able to take a nine-point lead into the break at 42-33. L-R started the second half with an 8-1 run to open up a 17-point margin at 54-37 with 14:36 to play in the game ... Mars Hill was led by Brittini Young (Ramseur, N.C.) who scored a game-high 16 points while Narcissa Grayson (Danville, Va.) added 10 points ... Brittini Young became the 23rd Mars Hill women's basketball player to surpass 1,000 points scored in a career, but Catawba defeated the Lions 76-75 inside Stanford Arena ... Young scored 17 points in the loss. She currently sits behind Jackie Shelton (1,026 career points) on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,014 career points ... The Lions opened the game on a 13-2 run in the first 2:41. Young, from Ramseur, N.C., reached the mark on the first shot of the game with a three ... Catawba answered with a 14-4 spurt to cut the deficit to three points. Dana Hicks (York, S.C.) scored six consecutive points, with the last two at the 13:48 mark, to make the score 17-16 in favor of Mars Hill. A fastbreak layup by Hicks at the halfway point of the first half gave Catawba its first lead of the game, 21-19 ... Brooke Whitley (New London, N.C.) scored eight straight points to give Catawba a 32-24 advantage. The Lions went scoreless for 4:07 before Krystal Moore (Summerfield, N.C.) hit a free throw with 5:46 remaining in the first half ... Catawba grabbed its first double-digit lead 16 minutes into the half when Hicks scored a layup to make the score 36-25. Mars Hill cut Catawba's lead to four points, 36-32, at the 3:21 mark off an old-fashioned three-point play from Young, but Catawba carried a 40-36 advantage into intermission ... Hicks had a double-double in the first half with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Margaret Harvey (Greensboro, N.C.) scored 11 points in the first half. Young recorded 10 points at the break ... Mars Hill tied the game at 41 two minutes into the second half off a layup by Harvey. Moore converted two free throws with 12:33 remaining in the game to give the Lions their first lead of the second half, 49-48 ... From there, Catawba went on a 7-0 run. A three by Nisha Long (Dallas, N.C.) and fastbreak layup by Kisha Long (Dallas, N.C.) gave Catawba a 55-49 advantage ... Mars Hill responded with a 12-0 run. Bria Smith (Snellville, Ga.) drilled a shot from behind the arc and converted two technical foul shots at the midpoint of the second half to regain the lead for the Lions, 61-55 ... Catawba answered with a 9-0 run. Kisha Long stole the ball from Harvey and made a layup plus one to give her team a 64-61 advantage ... Trailing 68-67, Moore hit a three to give Mars Hill the upper hand, 70-68, with 4:19 left in regulation. The two teams traded three-pointers before two free throws by Hicks gave Catawba a 74-73 lead with 2:31 left in the game ... After Hicks missed a jumper from the baseline with 19.7 seconds left, Moore's game-winning shot attempt fell short. A follow by Deal was also unsuccessful ... Harvey led all Lion scorers with 20 points. Moore nailed 17 points. Deal recorded a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds ... In a game that featured eight ties and 15 lead changes, Catawba had 13 steals compared to only six for Mars Hill. Catawba had 11 more made free throw attempts than the Lions and outscored Mars Hill on the fastbreak 10-2 ... The Lions will host Wingate on Wednesday. Tipoff from Stanford Arena is set for 6 p.m.
NEWBERRY - In its only game last week, the Newberry College women's basketball team held off a Lincoln Memorial comeback effort in order to gain the South Atlantic Conference victory … Newberry (11-4, 4-1 SAC) pulled away early but allowed LMU (4-10, 2-3 SAC) to battle back in before solidifying the 64-61 victory … Ultimately, the scarlet and gray converted on the free-throw opportunities that they needed to thwart the Railsplitters' comeback effort ... Newberry shot 10-13 (.769) from the line in second half and 12-15 (.800) on free throws in the game … Newberry, unfazed by the travel involved with their longest road trip of the season, heated up early in the game and quickly ran out to a 10-0 lead … LMU battled right back; however, and evened the scarlet and gray for the first time at 14-14 just under midway through the opening period … The teams tied the score four times and swapped the lead twice before Newberry exploded to a 9-2 run due in large part to the physical post play of Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) ... Newberry ended the half up 31-23 and Watson ended the half with 10 points … LMU played more aggressively in the second half and tied the score again with 10:20 left to play … In the game's deciding moments, Keisha Henderson (Columbia, S.C.) stepped to the free-throw line with 10 seconds showing on the clock and Newberry clinging to a one-point lead … Henderson managed crucial conversions on both her free throws, forcing LMU to settle for a three-point attempt in their final possession … The Railsplitters would actually end up with two looks at a game-tying three pointer thanks to an offensive rebound, but both were well guarded and fell harmlessly to the floor to preserve the 64-61 win for Newberry … Watson ended her day with a career-high 24 points by shooting 10-19 (.526) from the field and 4-6 (.667) from the free-throw line … Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio), Newberry's second-leading scorer, ended the night with 15 points … Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) found her way to double-digits as well with 10 … Jessica Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia) completed a well-rounded night with a career-high nine assists, three steals, four rebounds and one block … Newberry will take a full week off before hosting Tusculum in another SAC matchup on Wednesday, January 20.
TUSCULUM - The Tusculum College women's basketball team posted a 1-1 record last week, sweeping the season series against District of Columbia on Tuesday before falling to No. 10 Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday…The Pioneers registered their fifth 20-point victory of the season on Tuesday against District of Columba, defeating the Firebirds 83-55 as Jasmine Gunn posted the first triple-double in the program's recorded history…Gunn turned in her sixth 20-point game of the season, pouring in 22 markers on a blistering 8-of-11 clip from the floor while recording season-highs of 11 assists and 10 rebounds to notch the first triple-double of her career…Junior Brittni Oliver set a pair of career highs against UDC, posting personal bests with 12 points and four three-pointers…Tusculum won the battle on the glass for the third straight game and the fifth time in its last six contests, out-rebounding the Firebirds by a 44-30 margin, including a 32-17 advantage on the defensive boards…The Pioneers knocked down at 50 percent of their field goal attempts for the third time this season, connecting on 52.6 percent of their shots including an even 50 percent (9-of-18) from behind the arc...Carson-Newman took advantage of a slow start by the Pioneers on Saturday, outscoring TC 44-29 in the first half and holding off several rallies in the second period to stretch its season-opening winning streak to 15 games with a 90-77 win over archrival Tusculum…Catherine Hintz and Jasmine Gunn each turned in a 20-point performance for the Pioneers as Hintz notched her third double-double of the season with 16 rebounds and a career-high 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting…Jasmine Gunn turned in her seventh 20-point game of the season, pouring in 20 markers on 6-of-14 shooting while going a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe…The 4-11 All-American has converted her last 15 free throw attempts to move into third on the program's all-time made free throws list and raise her season percentage to an even 75 percent (69-of-92)…Tusculum won the battle on the glass for the fourth straight game while extending its streak of 40 or more rebounds to nine contests, out-rebounding the Eagles by a 47-36 margin, including a 28-22 edge on the defensive boards…The Eagle defense forced the Pioneers into 28 turnovers, converting those miscues into 33 points while recording 19 steals…The Pioneers lead the conference in scoring (78.7) and field goal percentage (43.7), while ranking second in rebounding (45.0) and steals (173)…Freshman Kendal Baxter has already put together one of the best rookie seasons in program history, having knocked down 48 three-pointers thus far, which is the third-highest total by a freshman in school history…The Pioneers have six players averaging more than eight points per game, including the scoring duo of Gunn and Baxter, who have combined for nearly 30 markers per contest through 15 games…Kat Spears is now within striking distance of the program's all-time blocked shots record, currently sitting third all-time with 123 career rejections, 18 behind former teammate Stephany Neptune's school-record total of 141 blocks…Gunn currently ranks in the top 10 in seven career categories, including assists (3rd/424), free throws made (3rd/338), free throws attempted (4th/420), steals (8th/178), while ranking first all-time in program history with an average of 5.7 assists per game…Jasmine Parker has quietly climbed into the top 10 on the program's career assists list, currently ranking eighth all-time with 244 helpers after jumping three spots on Saturday with six assists…Tusculum hits the road once again this week, traveling to Newberry, S.C. on Wednesday and Wingate, N.C. on Saturday for a pair of SAC matchups with Newberry College and Wingate University.
WINGATE - The Wingate women played three contests in the last six days. On Monday night, NCAA Division I Charleston Southern rallied for a 62-59 victory over the visiting Bulldogs. Wingate's four non-conference losses this season have been by a combined 16 points ... Wingate sophomore guard/forward Kurie Washington led the Bulldogs with 13 points Monday. She filled out her statistics ledger with five rebounds and three assists. Bulldog junior guard CC Brooks had 11 points, while senior center Stacie Rhodes posted nine points, 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists ... The game featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes. Charleston Southern led 58-49 with 6:53 remaining. Wingate freshman forward Tish Logan hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 58-57 with 2:02 to go, capping an 8-0 run for the Bulldogs. Rhodes contributed two huge blocked shots to the flurry ... CSU converted a follow shot to go up 60-57 at the 1:13 plateau. Wingate answered, as Brooks hit two free throws with 1:02 to cut the deficit to one. The Bucs hit an inside hoop with 37 seconds left to account for the final margin ... Brooks and Logan missed chances to pull the Bulldogs within one in the waning seconds. Wingate was forced to foul, but Charleston Southern missed the front end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds remaining. CSU got the offensive rebound, but Brooks stole the ball with two seconds to go. Wingate could not get a potential game-tying shot as time expired ... Wingate hit 33.3 percent of its shots from the floor (17-of-51). The Bulldogs converted six-of-14 three-point field goals (42.9 percent), while making 19-of-24 free throws (79.2 percent). Wingate held a slim 42-41 rebounding edge. The Bulldog reserves outscored the CSU bench 26-8 ... Charleston Southern made 24-of-66 field goals for 36.4 percent. The Bucs shot 20.7 percent from three-point land (six-of-29). CSU managed only 50 percent shooting from the charity stripe (eight-of-16). The Buccaneers converted 25 Bulldog turnovers into 23 points. Wingate scored 22 points off 19 CSU turnovers ... In the first half, Wingate led 34-25 when senior guard Sarah Rosser nailed a three-point field goal with 1:36 left in the opening frame. The Bucs finished the half on a 6-0 run to cut the CSU deficit to 34-31 at intermission. Washington led Wingate with 11 first-half points ... Four Bulldogs scored in double figures and the Wingate defense held Brevard to 17.7 percent shooting from the field to secure an 82-56 victory in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon in Cuddy Arena. Rhodes had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wingate attack. Washington and junior forward Stefani Shuey aadded 13 points each, while freshman guard Britney Mitchell contributed a career-high 12 points. Sophomore guard Stephanie Whitenack handed out a game-high eight assists for the Bulldogs ... The Bulldogs knocked down 11 free throws in the final nine minutes to secure the victory. The two teams combined to shoot 88 free throws in the game, with Brevard hitting 32-of-47 and Wingate canning 29-of-41 ... The Bulldogs shot 42.4 percent from the field and converted 19 Brevard turnovers into 18 points. The Bulldogs outscored the Tornados 34-14 in the paint and 17-2 in fast break points. Wingate also held a decisive 57-42 rebounding advantage on the afternoon ... Carson-Newman topped Wingate University 78-68 Wednesday night in Holt Fieldhouse on the Carson-Newman campus. The Eagles are the number 10 team in the NCAA Division II top 25 poll ... For Wingate, Rhodes and Washington posted 13 points each. Rhodes hit six-of-six shots from the floor Wednesday. Brooks had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Shuey contributed 10 points on five-of-six shooting.
