Women's basketball notes and game recaps for week ending November 28, 2010:
ANDERSON - The Trojans were idle last week, but get back on the hardwood Thursday with a visit to Winston-Salem State University the ends a 15-day layoff … Anderson will be looking to avenge an earlier 54-46 setback suffered at the hands of the Lady Rams … The Trojans follow up by playing host to Brevard in AU's conference opener on Saturday.
BREVARD - The Tornados went 2-1 this week as they were able to take down a Conference Carolinas foe in Lees-McRae, as well as Young Harris … Brevard first took the floor against the Mountain Lions of Young Harris and were able to top them 59-54 in Young Harris, Georgia … Three Tornados were in double-figures in the win over the Mountain Lions with Lindsay Brendle leading the way with 15 points, while Candice Fritz contributed 14 and Holli Flippo added 11 … Brevard opened up the Comfort Suites Classic at Catawba College on Friday night when they took on Conference Carolinas preseason favorite Barton College … The Bulldogs of Barton College topped the Tornados 82-71 … Micheala Watkins led the Tornados in the loss with 24 points and four steals … Candice Fritz and Holli Flippo each managed to score double-digits as well by putting up 16 and 10 respectively … Brevard closed out the Classic with a win over the Lees-McRae Bobcats on Saturday afternoon … The Tornados were able to top the Bobcats 71-56 with Watkins leading the way for the second game in a row … She was able to score 20 points in the win, going 5-for-9 from the field and 9-for-12 from the free throw line … Watkins also contributed five rebounds, four assists, a block, and a pair of steals … Brendle and Anna Schlobohm each dropped 11 in the win.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles had last week off ... The previous week the Lady Eagles went 2-1 behind an impressive three-game stretch from senior guard Mandy Mendenhall ... Mendenhall averaged 17.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and three steals per game while shooting 51.2 percent from the floor in the three contests ... C-N returns to action on Dec. 1 at home against Maryville College.
CATAWBA - Catawba won two of three games over the week, playing at home for the first time this season ... After falling to Livingstone 79-74, the Lady Indians rebounded to take easy wins over Lees-McRae (79-45) and Barton (81-55) at the Comfort Suites Classic ... Dana Hicks posted double-doubles in all three games for Catawba extending her streak to six straight contests ... The junior tallied 28 points and grabbed 15 boards in the loss to Livingstone ... She nearly tied a school record when she canned all 12 of her free throw attempts, just one behind the mark of 13 in a game ... Catawba was down by 20 at the half against Livingstone, but did pull within four points late ... The Lady Indians hit just 6-of-32 shots in the first half then scored 56 points in the second half ... Catawba held Lees-McRae to just three points over the first 10 minutes in grabbing a 20-point edge ... Hicks finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Milica Ivanovic added 13 points and nine boards ... Catawba capped the week by avenging an earlier loss to Barton ... Kisha Long equaled her career-high with 26 points to lead the ladies, while Hicks added 11 points and 10 rebounds ... Catawba travels to Livingstone on Wednesday before hosting Carson-Newman in its league-opener on Saturday afternoon.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's basketball team (4-1, 1-0) opened South Atlantic Conference play last Tuesday with a 70-57 victory over Newberry College (1-2, 0-1) at Eleazer Arena in Newberry, S.C. … Freshman forward Whitney Brinkley (Asheville, N.C.) led the Bears with 20 points on seven-of-eight shooting, while junior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) added a double-double (15 points and 11 rebounds) as the Bears pushed their winning streak to four games … L-R also won at Newberry for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign … The Bears have now started 4-1 or better for the fourth straight season … With the scored tied at 41 early in the second half, Lenoir-Rhyne broke the game open with a 17-1 run … Sophomore guard Whitley Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) added 14 points and a team-high six assists for L-R, who limited Newberry to just 35 percent shooting (18-of-52) for the contest … Helen McKinney led Newberry with 26 points despite the loss … Sealey (662 points) has a chance to become the 17th player in school history to cross the 1,000-point mark in program history … The Bears hit the road for two games this week … On Monday, Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Aiken, S.C., to face USC Aiken beginning at 7 p.m. … The Pacers lead the series, 4-1, while the two squads split their two games last year … L-R then travels to Mars Hill, N.C., to take on Mars Hill in a league contest Saturday at 2 p.m. … Lenoir-Rhyne leads the all-time series with Mars Hill, 34-32, and has won 10 straight games in the series.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - The Lady Railsplitters went 2-0 for the week with victories over King and Mount Olive … On Tuesday they moved their win streak vs. King to 2 games (and 18-2 all-time) with the 64-62 win. LMU never trailed in the whole game, but King did hang around and tied the game at 62-62 with 16 seconds left … LMU held for the last-second shot and King's Kalen Collins fouled LMU's Dayshalee Salaman as she drove for the basket with 2 seconds left … Salaman hit both free throws and the desperation heave by King went long as LMU picked up the win … Salaman led LMU with 19 points and Melanie Hemphill added in 10 … On Saturday LMU made the long trip to Mount Olive and dispatched the Trojans 73-54. The first half saw MOC take a 7-point lead before LMU methodically chipped away at it, eventually tying the game at the half on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Salaman from beyond half-court … The second half saw LMU explode offensively and coast to the 19 point win … Salaman led LMU with 27 points as she went 8-10 from the field and passed the 900 point mark for her career … Patrice Talley added in 17 points to go with her 12 rebounds and Hemphill had 12 points … LMU travels to King on Wednesday before opening up SAC play at Wingate Saturday afternoon.
MARS HILL - Mars Hill is 4-1 overall. The Lions defeated Queens, 80-75, last week … Brittini Young scored a season-high 27 points and was 15-16 from the free-throw line … Kristen Metcalf tied a season-high with 14 points. Taylor Deal and Jocelyn Williams added 11 and 10 points, respectively … The Lions were 26-33 from the charity stripe … Mars Hill will host Lenoir-Rhyne on December 4. Tipoff from Stanford Arena is set for 2 p.m.
NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves split a pair of games last week, dropping their SAC opener to Lenoir-Rhyne and beating Pfeiffer on the road … Newberry is now 2-2 overall and 0-1 in SAC play … Newberry dropped a 70-57 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday … Helen McKinney led the Wolves with 26 points, but no other Newberry player managed to score in double digits … Newberry led at the half, but shot only 16.7 percent from the field in the second half … On Saturday, Newberry hit the road and beat Pfeiffer by a 70-57 count … This time, McKinney scored 32 points, which marks the ninth-best scoring performance in a Newberry game … She shot 11-of-25 from the field … Leeara Creet scored 10 points and the Wolves held a 37-30 advantage on the boards … The Wolves fell behind by as many as nine points in the early stages, but came back to take a halftime lead and pull away … Newberry has led at the half in all four games so far this season … The Wolves have a busy week ahead of them with three home contests … Newberry hosts North Greenville at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday before welcoming Allen to Eleazer Arena at 6 p.m. Thursday … The Wolves host No. 23 Tusculum at 4 p.m. Saturday in the feature game of the "Ladies' Day" doubleheader … All women will be admitted free to Saturday's doubleheader as part of the Ladies' Day promotion.
TUSCULUM - The 23rd-ranked Tusculum Pioneers won two games at the University of Indianapolis Thanksgiving Classic, defeating Lewis 93-82 and knocking off 7th-ranked UIndy 83-64 to improve to 2-3 this season … Senior guard Jasmine Gunn (Nashville, Tenn.) averaged 25.5 points in the two games and shot 22-for-24 from the foul line in the victories ... Senior forward Staci Hicks (Loveland, Ohio) scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds against UIndy ... Junior forward Linda Aughburns (Fayetteville, N.C.) had the team's first double-double of the year against Lewis with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds ... Tusculum committed just 17 total turnovers in the two wins, including just five against Indianapolis, and yielded only 11 points off those miscues. The Pioneers forced Lewis and UIndy into 35 turnovers and converted them into 56 points ... Tusculum went 53-for-61 from the foul line for the week, going 31-for-35 against Lewis and 22-for-26 against UIndy ... Gunn is two free throws shy of moving into second place on the program's all-time list, and needs one rebound to enter the top 10 ... The Pioneers travel to King for a non-conference game Monday night before opening up SAC play Saturday afternoon at Newberry.
WINGATE - The Wingate University women's basketball team did not play during Thanksgiving week. The Bulldogs return to action Thursday, visiting North Greenville University for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Wingate opens SAC play Saturday, hosting Lincoln Memorial University at 2 p.m.
