Women's basketball notes and game recaps for week ending January 2, 2011:
ANDERSON - The Trojans suffered a pair of setbacks to Sunshine State Conference foes at the Rollins College Holiday Classic in Winter Park, Fla., dropping a 70-38 decision to 14th-ranked and undefeated Rollins College last Wednesday, than falling 71-49 to Florida Tech on the final day of action … Anderson shot a season-low 29.5 percent from the field following a 10-day break for the Christmas holidays in the loss to Rollins, with the Tars holding a slight 30-29 advantage on the boards. The AU defense forced 18 turnovers but committed 23 miscues of its own … The Trojans fell behind Florida Tech early as the Panthers claimed their eighth consecutive victory. Anderson held a commanding 49-32 advantage on the boards, but committed a season-high 32 turnovers … Senior guard Alexa Neal was chosen to the Rollins Holiday Classic All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament on Thursday. The 5-foot-8 senior averaged eight points, 4.5 rebounds and two assists in the two-day event, posting a team-high 10 points in the setback to Rollins … Anderson gets back to South Atlantic Conference action with a three-game homestand, beginning with Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday.
BREVARD - The Brevard College women's basketball team participated in one contest this week when they fell to South Atlantic Conference foe Tusculum College 76-61 … Anna Schlobohm and Lindsay Brendle led the Tornados with 15 points each in the loss ... Amanda Whitaker was able to pull down six rebounds while Schlobohm was able to dish out four assists in the game ... The Tornados fell to 4-7 on the season and 0-2 in the SAC with the loss, and take on King College in their next game on Monday night and take on the Carson-Newman Eagles on Wednesday night.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles went 0-2 on the week, dropping a pair of games in the Rollins Holiday Classic in Winter Park, Fla. … C-N fell to Florida Tech, 73-59, on Wednesday ... Florida Tech used a 17-2 run to rally from a seven-point second half deficit to knock off the Lady Eagles ... Carson-Newman led by four at the half and by as many as seven in the early moments of the second half, before the Panthers rallied with their decisive run ... The Lady Eagles held the Panthers to only 40 percent from the floor for the game, but Florida Tech shot an impressive 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from three-point range to seize control, including 5-of-6 in the second half ... Senior guard Mandy Mendenhall led the Lady Eagles with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor ... Senior Caitlin Moore added 10 points for the Lady Eagles .... In their second game of the week, the Lady Eagles fell to No. 14 Rollins, 79-64 ... The Tars knocked down 11 3-pointers and scored 28 points off of Lady Eagle turnovers ... Freshman forward Shannon Depew fired in a career-high 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Lady Eagles, while junior forward Zoriah Williams added 12 points in the loss ... C-N shot 43 percent (24-of-56) from the floor but was just 3-of-15 from behind the arc ... Rollins scored at a 45 percent clip (27-of-60) and made 11-of-23 attempts from 3-point range ... The Lady Eagles held a 39-32 advantage on the boards ... The Lady Eagles got off to a hot start, outscoring the Tars 11-0 in the first four minutes ... However, Rollins responded with a 37-7 run to take control of the game as it went into the locker room with a 42-28 lead ... The Lady Eagles return to action on Wednesday in a South Atlantic Conference matchup at Brevard ... Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
CATAWBA - Dana Hicks posted her tenth double-double of the season in helping Catawba win in its first outing after the holiday break ... The Lady Indians rallied for a 63-58 win over Belmont Abbey in its final non-conference tilt ... Hicks scored six straight points in the final five minutes on two stick backs and a pair of free throws as Catawba grabbed a 61-53 lead with 3:06 left ... Kisha Long salted the game away on a pair of free throws with 33 seconds remaining ... Hicks finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Long added 14 points ... Catawba trailed 44-33 early in the second half ... A 15-4 run, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by Lauren Lewis and another by Long, pulled Catawba even with just over nine minutes left ... The Lady Indians committed just 10 turnovers and helped force 18 Crusader miscues ... Hicks is scoring at a 19.5 clip this season and is averaging 11.1 rebounds ... She has been to the free throw line twice as many times as any other Lady Indian and is canning 76.4 percent at the stripe ... Milica Ivanovic is adding 15.1 points and 6.7 rebounds a game with Long tossing in 13.2 a contest ... Catawba is holding its opponents to just 37 percent shooting on the year and is a plus in both rebounding and turnover margin ... The ladies host Wingate on Wednesday and travel to Anderson on Saturday.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's basketball team (4-6) lost both its games last Wednesday (December 29) and Thursday (December 30) at the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic in Morrow, Ga. … On the first day, second-ranked and undefeated Lander defeated Lenoir-Rhyne by a score of 83-61 … Junior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) led the Bears with 14 points while sophomore forward Precious Elkins (Conyers, Ga.) added a double-double (11 points and 10 rebounds) despite the loss … Lenoir-Rhyne, despite holding a 52-32 edge in rebounding, turned the ball over 29 times in the setback … L-R then fell to the host school of the tournament, No. 6 Clayton State, 71-40, on Thursday despite 12 points and 11 rebounds by Elkins (her second straight double-double) … Four players scored in double figures for the Lakers, who forced the Bears into 41 turnovers … Both Lander and Clayton State are a combined 24-0 … Lenoir-Rhyne has not lost five games in a row since the end of the 2005-06 campaign … Sealey (754 points) has a chance of becoming the 17th player in school history to cross the 1,000-point mark for her career this season … Lenoir-Rhyne looks to bounce back this week when it returns to South Atlantic Conference play against Anderson (Wednesday at 6 p.m., on the road) and Carson-Newman (Saturday at 4 p.m.) at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium … Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne have met only once before with the Bears prevailing by a 69-58 score in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Basketball Tournament in Hickory, N.C. … Carson-Newman leads the all-time series with Lenoir-Rhyne, 33-20, and defeated the Bears, 79-72, in the first round of last season's NCAA Division II Playoffs in Greenwood, S.C.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - After several days off for Christmas, the LMU women's team traveled to Morrow, Ga. for the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic on Dec. 29 and 30 … They faced No. 6 Clayton State and No. 2 Lander, falling to both … In the first game, LMU kept their upset hopes alive until late in the game, but sixth-ranked Clayton State pulled ahead in the final minutes to pick up the 64-55 win … LMU (5-4) was led by Patrice Talley's 16 points. Carrie Ann Harris added in 13 … The Lady Railsplitters won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Clayton State 23-21 … Cold shooting and strong defensive pressure doomed LMU as they fell to second-ranked Lander 76-48 … It was a milestone day for Dayshalee Salaman as she finished with a team-high 12 points, making her the 17th player in LMU women's basketball history to pass the 1,000 point mark and the first to do so since 2006 … Next up for the Lady Railsplitters will be a trip to Tusculum for a South Atlantic Conference contest on Jan. 5.
MARS HILL - Last week, the Mars Hill women's basketball team improved to 8-2 and captured the 2010 San Diego Surf 'N Slam Classic Championship. The Lions defeated Assumption and Ashland. Taylor Deal was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Deal and Brittini Young were named to the all-tournament team.
NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves women's basketball squad split a pair of games at the Georgia College Holiday Classic to move to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in SAC play entering 2011 … On Dec. 29, the Wolves lost to the host Georgia College Bobcats, 67-43, marking their lowest point total of the season … Newberry went just 14-of-51 from the field in the game and Helen McKinney's 22 points marked the only Newberry player who scored more than five points … Newberry was outrebounded by a 46-31 margin … On Dec. 30, Newberry rebounded and defeated UNC Pembroke, 57-51 … The Wolves limited UNCP to just five first half field goals and held off a late rally … McKinney scored 20 to lead Newberry, while Jessica Bearzatto added 9 points and Briana Johnson scored 8 … Newberry has now completed its non-conference schedule and begins 2011 with home games against Mars Hill at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m. Saturday.
TUSCULUM - The Pioneers returned from a two-week layoff to defeat Brevard 76-61 at Pioneer Arena Thursday night … Junior forward Linda Aughburns (Fayetteville, N..C.) paced Tusculum with a season-high 17 points while senior center Catherine Hintz (Hastings, Minn.) came off the bench to contribute 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in 18 minutes of action … In all, five Pioneers reached double figures in the contest, which Tusculum led from start to finish by as many as 23 points … Tusculum has outrebounded its opponents in five straight games and seven of its last eight contests … Sophomore guard Kendal Baxter (Sevierville, Tenn.) has moved into fourth place on the Tusculum career three-pointer list with 127 … Aughburns has reached double figures in either points or rebounds in eight of the Pioneers' 10 games … Senior guard Jasmine Gunn (Nashville, Tenn.) needs 25 points to tie Danyel Locklear (Catawba 2000-04) for seventh place on the all-time SAC scoring list at 1,838 points … The Pioneers host Lincoln Memorial Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. and travel to Wingate Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
WINGATE - The Bulldogs went 1-1 in the Bobcat Classic last week. The 'Dogs are 6-4 overall, and 1-1 in the SAC … Wingate started its week with a 70-65 victory over UNC Pembroke. Junior forward Simone Rutledge had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs past the Braves. Rutledge hit six-of-10 shots from the field, while adding four assists for the Bulldogs … Sophomore guard Sarah Wollett added 10 points for Wingate, who had eight players score at least five points. Junior guard Kurie Washington and junior guard Tiffany Brown chipped in with nine points each for Wingate … The Bulldogs used a 14-0 run to turn a four-point deficit into a 55-45 lead at the 10:32 mark. Freshman forward Shey Brown tied the game with a layup, while a jumper from Rutledge put Wingate on top at the 13:25 mark … Rutledge and Brown added two more buckets each in the flurry, while Logan capped it with a jumper … The Braves scored the next seven points, cutting the lead to three with 7:52 remaining. Logan pushed the Wingate lead back to seven with a jumper at the 5:10 mark … The Braves tied it at 61 with 3:30 to go. Wollett answered with a three to give the Bulldogs a 64-61 lead. After a UNCP layup cut the lead to one, Rutledge and Wollett each hit a free throw to push the Bulldog lead to three … Wollett knocked down a pair of free throws with six seconds left to secure the win for the Bulldogs … Wingate erased an 11-point deficit at Georgia College the following day … The Bulldogs used a 10-0 run to take a 52-49 advantage with eight minutes remaining in regulation … Janitsha Williams started the flurry with a three-point play, while a layup from Rutledge tied it. Two more free throws from Williams gave the 'Dogs a three-point lead … A triple from Williams put Wingate on top 55-51 with 4:17 left in regulation. The Bobcats hit four free throws in the final minute to tie the game at 55 … Senior forward CC Brooks had a chance to win the game in regulation, put could not get her jumper to fall with five seconds remaining … Washington drained a jumper to give the 'Dogs a one point lead with 3:41 remaining in overtime. She would knock down a pair of free throws to give Wingate a 61-60 advantage at the 2:15 mark … No team would score again until the Bobcats converted the game-winning jumper with seven seconds left … Williams led the Wingate attack with a career-high 18 points. Washington added 14 points, while Rutledge had eight points and 10 boards … The 'Dogs return to league play this week, traveling to Catawba College Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest. Wingate returns home Saturday, hosting Tusculum College at 2 p.m.
