Women's basketball notes and game recaps for week ending February 13, 2011:
ANDERSON - Senior guard Ashley Abed averaged a team-high 17.5 points and sophomore forward Breonda Shannon recorded 16 rebounds on the week, as the Trojans earned a 61-56 road win last Wednesday at Newberry, then fell, 74-65 at Catawba … Anderson connected on a season-high 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from beyond the arc in the Newberry win, with the second half alone featuring seven lead changes and six ties … Abed led all scorers with 17 points on the strength of 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc … Catawba took an early lead versus AU, but the Trojans battled back to gain a narrow 38-36 halftime lead before the Lady Indians claimed the lead for good midway through the second half … Abed again led Anderson with 18 points. The Trojans wrap up their home ssdchedule by playing host to Tusculum on Wednesday and LMU on Senior Day.
BREVARD - The Brevard College Tornados went 0-2 this week after falling to both Catawba, 68-62, and Mars Hill, 65-55 … Despite double-figure scoring efforts by three Tornados, they couldn't hold off the Indians … Anna Schlobohm led the Tornados offense with 17 points in the loss … Micheala Watkins and Lindsay Brendle each added 16 points of their own. Watkins ended the game with six steals, two blocks and four assists, while Amanda Whitaker was dominant in the paint on the defensive end with four blocks and a pair of steals … After spotting the Lions a 15-point lead in the first half, Brevard was able to bring the game back to within one, but couldn't hold Mars Hill off … Watkins led the Tornados offense with 14 points in the loss. She was complimented by Holli Flippo's 12 points. Flippo had three steals, while Whitaker added three swipes of her own … The Tornados shot 34 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free-throw line ... Brevard shot just 14.7 percent from beyond the arc in the second half and 26.9 percent from three-point land in the game ... The Tornados play host to Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday this week and travel to Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles went 0-2 on the week as they fell on the road to Tusculum and at home to Lenoir-Rhyne ... With the losses, C-N is now 10-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference ... The Lady Eagles erased a 15-point second-half deficit to take the lead on Wednesday night against Tusculum, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers held on for a 77-73 victory at Pioneer Arena ... The Lady Eagles trailed 59-44 with 12:27 left before senior guard Mandy Mendenhall took over to lead C-N back into the game ... Mendenhall scored 16 of her 18 points on the night during a 27-13 run that gave the Lady Eagles a 72-71 advantage at the 3:11 mark ... After two ties, Tusculum senior center Catherine Hintz made a layup with 51 seconds left to give the Pioneers the lead for good at 75-73 ... C-N shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) on the night, while Tusculum scored at a 46.3 percent clip (31-of-67) ... The Pioneers held a 40-39 edge on the boards ... Both teams committed 18 turnovers, but Tusculum scored 28 points off of C-N's miscues ... Junior forward Zoriah Williams fired in 21 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to pace the Lady Eagles, while freshman Shannon Depew finished with 12 points and five rebounds ... Sophomore Whitney Moody chipped in 11 points in the loss ... C-N fell behind by double digits in the first half and never recovered against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, as the Bears held on for a 71-64 victory at Holt Fieldhouse ... Lenoir-Rhyne used a 24-5 run in the last 10 minutes of the opening half to put the game away ... The Lady Eagles were dominated on the boards all game, grabbing only 41 rebounds to L-R's 60 ... After being held to just four points in the first half, Williams erupted in the second, ending with 19 points while adding 13 rebounds ... Depew missed key minutes of the second half while in foul trouble, but still managed to score 16 points and grab 10 rebounds of her own ... The Lady Eagles return to action on Wednesday at home against Mars Hill ... Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
CATAWBA - The Lady Indians extended its win streak to three games with a pair of SAC wins last week ... Catawba won 68-62 at Brevard on Wednesday then 74-65 at home over Anderson on Saturday ... Milica Ivanovic scored 13 of her 20 points in the second half at Brevard to help the ladies overcome a 32-25 deficit ... Dana Hicks (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Elizabeth Merritt (11 points, 10 rebounds) each collected double-doubles in the win ... Catawba shot nearly 46 percent, including 56 percent in the second half ... The ladies also enjoyed a 42-27 edge on the glass ... The Lady Indians had just seven turnovers in the win over Anderson, and only two in the second half ... Catawba trailed 50-44 in the second half, but used a 16-5 run to go on top for good ... Both teams hit on 24-of-56 shots, but the Lady Indians scored 19 points at the line to just nine for Anderson ... All five starters reached double figures for Catawba with Ivanovic and Kisha Long scoring 14 ... Hicks had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds ... Hicks continues to average a double-double at 16.6 points and 11.3 rebounds a contest ... After losing six straight and shooting poorly in all the losses, the Lady Indians connected on over 40 percent in each of the last three wins ... Ivanovic is averaging nearly 17 points a contest in league games.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's basketball team (12-10, 9-5) split its two South Atlantic Conference games last week … L-R fell to Wingate at home by a 66-45 score Wednesday before traveling to Jefferson City, Tenn., and beating Carson-Newman, 71-64, Saturday night … The Bulldogs' Simone Rutledge tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds and Wingate held a 55-35 advantage on the board in sweeping the season series from Lenoir-Rhyne … Wingate also hit 22-of-23 free throw attempts (96 percent) and held L-R to just 27 percent shooting (16-of-60) from the field … Junior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) was the lone player to score in double figures for the Bears, finishing with 16 points … The loss was just the second in 23 SAC Regular Season home games for Lenoir-Rhyne … L-R avenged an earlier home setback to Carson-Newman by defeating the Eagles behind a team-high 17 points from Sealey … Sophomore Precious Elkins (Conyers, Ga.) added 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as the Bears held a 60-41 rebounding edge in winning for the third straight year against the Eagles on the road … Sealey is just 22 points away from becoming the 17th player to score 1,000 points in program history … Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Salisbury, N.C., to take on Catawba Wednesday at 6 p.m., before returning home to face Brevard Saturday at 4 p.m. … L-R defeated both Catawba (60-55) and Brevard (70-65) in the earlier meetings this year … Lenoir-Rhyne has won seven straight over Catawba and has never lost to Brevard (10-0 all-time).
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - The Lady Railsplitters dropped two games last week to run their losing streak to seven … On Wednesday, a late run fell short as they fell at Mars Hill 83-71 … After a back and forth first half, the Lions went on to take a 42-31 lead into halftime … The second half saw Mars Hill extend the lead to as much as 18 points before LMU began to chip away at it … A trey by Salaman and free throws by Chelsea Craig cut the lead to 68-63 with 4:50 left … Mars Hill rallied and pulled the lead back out to double digits, eventually holding on for the 83-71 win … LMU was led by Salaman's 17 points. Patrice Talley added in 12 points … On Saturday LMU fell behind early in the second half and lost to Newberry 81-64. With the loss, the Lady Railsplitters fell to 3-11 in the South Atlantic Conference and 8-14 overall … The Lady Railsplitters were led in scoring by Dayshalee Salaman, who poured in 17 points … Destiny Williams also had a good night, adding 11 points … Chelsea Craig led the Lady Railsplitters in rebounding, pulling in seven boards on the evening … LMU will look to get back on the winning track Wednesday as they travel to Brevard for a 6 p.m. tip.
MARS HILL - Mars Hill went 2-0 during the previous week of play to run its record to 15-7 overall, 8-6 in the SAC … The Lions defeated LMU, 83-71, and Brevard, 65-55 … Taylor Deal averaged 19 points per game. Brittini Young averaged 15.5 ppg. Tyler Carlson and Jocelyn Williams averaged 12 and 10.5 points, respectively … Against the Lady Railsplitters, Deal posted a season-high 28 points … Williams posted a double-double for the Lions with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Young and Margaret Harvey had 18 and 12 points, respectively. Carlson chipped in 10 … The Lions were 29-63 from the field, 5-21 from behind the arc, and 20-27 from the free throw line … The Lady Railsplitters were 26-64 from the field, 3-15 from distance, and 16-18 from the charity stripe … Against the Tornados, the Lions had four players in double-figures as Carlson led with 14 points, three assists and four rebounds. Young had 13 while Williams and Deal added 10 points apiece. Deal led MHC on the boards with six rebounds … Mars Hill hit only 40.8 percent of their shots and struggled a bit at the foul line converting only 21-31 (67.7 percent) of their attempts … MHC won the battle of the boards, 38-30. The Lions scored 19 second chance points … Neither team took good care of the ball as they combined for 58 turnovers in the contest … Mars Hill will play at Carson-Newman on Wednesday. Game time in Holt Fieldhouse is set for 6 p.m. ET.
NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves split last week's games and now stand at 13-9 overall and 8-6 in SAC play … On Wednesday, the Wolves lost at home to Anderson, 61-56 … The visiting Trojans knocked down 13 three-pointers on the way to the victory … Freshman Devanee' Taylor led Newberry with 10 points, while Helen McKinney scored 9 … On Saturday, the Wolves hit the road again and came away with an 81-64 win at Lincoln Memorial … Newberry led by just three points at the half and ran away with the game in the second half … The Wolves also scored 18 points off of 18 LMU turnovers … McKinney scored 24 points, while Leanne Watson netted 19 points and Leeara Creet scored 10 … The Wolves play at Wingate on Wednesday night and host Carson-Newman on Saturday.
TUSCULUM - The Pioneers (16-6, 12-2 SAC) extended their winning streak to 10 games with wins over Carson-Newman (77-73) and Wingate (69-48) and opened up a three-game lead in the SAC standings with four games remaining ... Against Carson-Newman, the Pioneers let a 15-point second-half lead slip away before emerging with the victory. Senior center Catherine Hintz (Hastings, Minn.) hit the tiebreaking bucket in the final minute and senior guard Jasmine Gunn (Nashville, Tenn.) connected on a pair of free throws with two seconds to play to clinch the win. Gunn finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists while Hintz had 16 points and 12 boards in the victory ... In the win over Wingate, Gunn dropped in 20 points, grabbed a season-high 10 boards and dished out seven assists and Hintz turned in another double-double with 18 points and a season-high 15 rebounds … The Pioneers held the Bulldogs to 27.8 percent shooting and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds in the victory ... Since going 0-for-5 from three-point range against Lincoln Memorial on February 2, the Pioneers have gone 16-for-30 from beyond the arc in their last three games ... Over the last eight games, Tusculum is shooting just 58.1 percent (100-for-172) at the foul line ... Gunn has averaged 22.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 8.0 assists in the last three games ... Hintz has notched three double-doubles in the last four games, with averages of 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game despite playing just 20.3 minutes per game off the bench ... The Pioneers travel to Anderson for a 6 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday night, then return home on Saturday to host Catawba at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
WINGATE - The Wingate University women's basketball team split two SAC contests last week … On Wednesday night, Bulldog junior forward Simone Rutledge had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a convincing 66-45 victory at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Rutledge scored 16 of her team-high 18 points in the second half … Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne share second place in the league standings. The Bulldogs (14-8 overall, 9-5 SAC) have the tiebreaker, as Wingate swept the season series over the L-R Bears. The Bulldogs have won six games in eight tries … Wingate junior guard Kurie Washington and freshman guard Janitsha Williams had 13 points each Wednesday. Both players rebounded well, as Washington grabbed eight caroms and Williams corralled five rebounds … Rutledge had 16 points and six rebounds after the halftime break, helping the Bulldogs build on a 26-24 lead. Wingate opened the second stanza with a 16-5 run to take a 42-29 advantage on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Sarah Wollett at the 15:08 mark. The home-standing Bears would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way … Lenoir-Rhyne shot a frigid 21.2 percent (seven-of-33) in the second half. Wingate hit 42.9 percent (12-of-28) of its second-half field goals. The Bears converted only four field goals in the final 10 minutes. The final margin was the Bulldogs' largest lead of the night … Wingate outrebounded Lenoir-Rhyne 55-35 Wednesday. The Bulldogs pulled down 21 offensive rebounds and converted them into 24 second-chance points. The Bears had 15 offensive boards, but could manage only eight second-chance points … Williams and the Wingate reserves outscored the L-R bench 27-14. Williams hit four-of-six field goals and grabbed a team-high three steals. The Bulldogs hit 33.9 percent from the field (21-of-62), while the Bears hit 26.7 percent of their shot attempts (16-of-60). Lenoir-Rhyne launched 18 three-point attempts, making three (16.7 percent) … Tusculum earned a 69-48 decision over Wingate Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Arena. The Bulldogs and the Pioneers split the season series, as Wingate recorded a 69-63 home triumph on Sunday, Jan. 9. Washington had 13 points to lead the Bulldog attack. The All-SAC performer hit three-of-six field goals and seven-of-nine free throws. Rutledge contributed 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the visitors … On the SAC charts, Wingate leads the league with its 77.1 percent accuracy from the foul line. In the addition, the Bulldogs occupy the number one position in field goal percentage defense (36.7) and three-point field goal percentage (36.6). The Bulldogs are second in the SAC in scoring offense (71.5 points per game) and scoring margin (+6.0) … Washington is Wingate's top scorer, averaging 14.5 points per game. She is ninth on the conference scoring charts. The All-SAC performer is second in the conference in free throw percentage (and number one for Wingate) with her 84.7 conversion rate. The McDowell High School product passed the 1000-point plateau during Wingate's December victory at North Greenville University.
