The South Atlantic Conference Announces 2014-15 Women's Basketball Annual Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSac.com) – Anderson guard Sierra Simpson was voted the 2014-15 South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year, while Catawba's Terri Rogers was voted the Conference's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Anderson mentor Jimmy Garrity was tabbed the Coach of the Year, the League announced today.
Simpson, a senior from Simpsonville, S.C., helped fuel a Trojan attack that ranked tops in the Conference at 71.3 points per game. She finished the 2014-15 campaign ranked No. 2 in the South Atlantic Conference with 123 total assists, to go along with 10.7 points per game to rank second on the Trojans' roster. Simpson finished the season on a nine-game streak with at least 10 points, including 19 points in a win over Catawba on Feb. 14. Defensively, Simpson's 59 steals on the year was good for third in the League. Simpson picked up three first-place votes from the panel to finish with 183 points in the voting.
Rogers, a center from Burlington, N.C. posted five double-doubles and three 20-point games for the Catawba Indians this season. She also posted back-to-back 20-point, 10-rebound contests as she turned in 20 points and 10 boards in a win over Brevard on Jan. 10 and followed that effort with 28 points and 10 rebounds as Catawba defeated Coker on Jan. 14. Rogers finished the season ranked No. 4 on the Catawba roster with 10.9 points per game and was second on the team with 8.7 rebounds per game. She recorded five first-place votes and 43 points from the panel.
Garrity led his squad to their second South Atlantic Conference Championship in three years as the Trojans finished 20-2 in League play and 23-3 overall. Defensively, the Trojans held their opponents to a League-low 38 percent from the floor, while ranking second in the Conference with a 6.8 rebound margin. On the offensive glass, Anderson topped the SAC with 16.4 rebounds per game. The honor is his first-ever South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year plaudit as Garrity notched nine first-place votes and 46 points from the panel.
Newberry led the League with a pair of student-athletes on the First-Team All-Conference. The Wolves' Samantha Creed and Haylee Lepaio joined Simpson on the First-Team. Camille Glymph from Mars Hill, Wingate's Chantal Dunbar and Jazmine Charles from Lenoir-Rhyne rounded out the list for First-Team honorees.
