Carson-Newman Sixth, Newberry Ninth At NCAA Women’s Golf Region Tournament
SALISBURY, NC -- Nova Southeastern holds a slim one stroke lead over Florida Southern after two rounds of the 2010 NCAA II Super Region 2 Women's Golf Tournament, hosted by Catawba College at the 6,094-yard, Par-71 Country Club of Salisbury. The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday. The top three teams and the top three individuals not a member of the three qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA II Nationals. Barry and Rollins enter the final round tied for the third and final qualifying spot for the national tournament.
Individually, Joanna Coe, of Rollins, holds a two shot lead over Marianne Andersson, of Florida Southern, and Sandra Changkija, of Nova Southeastern. Those three will be in Tuesday's final pairing as they were on Monday. Each turned in even-par scores of 71 in rainy conditions in round two. The Carson-Newman women's golf team is in sixth place after shooting a 317 (+33) on Monday in the second round.
The Lady Eagles' second round score gives them a two-day total of 630 (+62).
C-N junior Jessica Tarbet (Corryton, Tenn.) shot a 78 (+7) to remain in contention for medalist honors. Tarbet is seven strokes back of Rollins' Joanna Cole, who leads the tournament with a two-round total of 143 after shooting even-par 71 on Monday.
C-N freshman Melanie Manis (Louisville, Tenn.) is in a tie for 19th with a score of 157 (79-78). Senior Sarah Jane Sinard (White Pine, Tenn.) shaved 10 strokes off her first round score to card a team-best 75 on Monday and is in a tie for 25th with a score of 160.
Sophomore Erica Ray (Maryville, Tenn.) is tied for 34th with a two-round total of 163 (77-86).
The No. 11 Newberry College women's golf program remained in 9th place.
The scarlet and gray combined for a team stroke total of 314 (+30), 16 fewer strokes than Sunday's 330. Newberry trails tournament leader Nova Southeastern University by 38 strokes.
Individually, Maria Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) moved into a tie for 16th shaving three strokes of her score from the first round. On Sunday, Besio shot a 76, 5-over par, and sits at 155 strokes (79-76; +13) for the tournament.
Freshman Josefine Mensner (Lorenskog, Norway) finished the second round with a combined stroke total of 161 (82-79; +19) and in a tie for 29th. Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) shot a 9-over par round (84-80; +22) on day two and completed play in a tie for 38th.
Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) is tied for 40th with a 165 (85-80; +23) and Lisa Brandl is in 45th after a two-day total of 167 (88-79; +25).
Wingate University junior Ashley Denton (Wendell, N.C.) is tied for 11th place after. Denton shot a 77 Monday and a 76 Sunday, giving her a two-day total of 153.
Denton started her second round on the 10th hole of the par 71, 6094-yard CC of Salisbury lay-out. She birdied the par four 10th hole, one of three birdies Denton made on her first seven holes Monday. The three-year All-South Atlantic Conference performer added two bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine, giving her a 37 as she made the turn.
On the front nine, Denton posted a 40 with four pars and five bogeys Monday. The Knightdale High School product shot 39 on the front nine Sunday. She matched her Sunday 37 with the Monday 37 on the back nine.
Catawba's Kelsey Babos shot a 78 on Monday to give her a two-day total of 158 and is in 22nd place.
The final round of the tournament will be played on Tuesday morning at the Country Club of Salisbury.
The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a qualifying team will advance to the national championship on May 12-15 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
