Tunnell Finishes Tied For 27th At NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Carson-Newman freshman Mary Tunnell (Memphis, Tenn.) carded a 6-over-par 78 Saturday, in the final round of the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich., to finish in a tie for 27th.
Tunnell finished with a four-round total of 308 (+20), which included a season-low score of 75 (+3) in the third round. For the second consecutive day, Tunnell was 1-under after the front nine as she recorded birdies on the par-5 first and par-4 fifth holes. Her struggles began on the ninth hole with her first bogey of the day. Tunnell went on to score a 42 (+7) on the back nine, which included five bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-4 eleventh.
Nova Southeastern's Taylor Collins cruised to the individual title in record-setting fashion. Her four-round total of 278 (-10) was the best finishing score in relation to par at the NCAA Division II Championship. Collins' teammate and 2010 individual champion, Sandra Changkija (286; -2), finished second and Abbey Gittings, yet another Nova Southeastern player, rounded out the top three with a total of 287 (-1).
Nova Southeastern dominated the team tournament from start to finish and ended with a total of 1,157 (+5) to win by 28 strokes over runner-up Rollins (1,185; +33). Florida Southern finished in third with a total of 1,196 (+44).
