Catawba Sweeps South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Women's Soccer Player of the Week Honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Women's Soccer Players of the Week for matches played during week seven of the 2019 season. Catawba forward Shelby Vasich was named the offensive player of the week, while teammate and goalkeeper Shelby Thompson was named defensive player of the week.
Vasich, a senior from Chatsworth, Calif., led the Catawba Indians to a pair of SAC victories last week, including a 4-3 win over nationally ranked No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne. She scored the game-winning goals in both games, netting the fourth and deciding goal against Lenoir-Rhyne and she scored both goals in the Indian's 2-0 win over Tusculum. Vasich finished the week with six points on three goals. This is her first offensive player of the week honor of the season.
Thompson, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., helped Catawba to a pair of league wins last week, including a 4-3 upset of No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne. She made nine saves in the Indian's 4-3 win over Lenoir-Rhyne and she then added two saves in the 2-0 shutout win over Tusculum. For the week she finished with 11 saves and a 1.50 goals against average. This is Thompson's first defensive player of the week award of the year.
