SUMTER, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – For the second straight year and sixth time in the last 11 years, the Wingate University Bulldogs are SAC Women's Tennis Tournament champions. The Bulldogs won the last two singles matches to prevail 4-3 and capture their 15th overall SAC title in the last 11 years (nine regular season, six tournament). Wingate improves to 16-1 overall, the Royals fall to 12-4 on the season.
Queens took the early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles points with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Royals extended that lead to 2-0 with a win by SAC Player of the Year Yana Fleyer at No. 1 singles.
The Bulldogs got on the board with a win at No. 5 singles and then tied the match at two with a victory at No. 3 singles.
Queens regained the lead with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, but a three-set win by the Bulldogs at No. 2 singles tied the match at three.
Wingate's Georgina Wood clinched the match and the title at No. 4 singles with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory. In addition to clinching the match, Wood was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
In addition to the tournament title, the Bulldogs earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Regional Championship.
