Wingate Places 26th at NCAA Cross Country Championship, Queens’ Duchampt an All-American
SAC and Southeast Region-champion Wingate placed 26th on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Championship, while Queens’ Felix Duchampt finished 24th in the men’s championship individual standings.
SPOKANE, Wash. – SAC and Southeast Region-champion Wingate placed 26th on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Championship, while Queens' Felix Duchampt finished 24th in the men's championship individual standings.
Wingate senior Keeley Wood finished 88th in the women's race with a 6K time of 22:31.7. Wood was making her second consecutive visit to the national championship site, as she qualified as an individual in 2012. Bulldog freshman Brittany Tretbar ran a 6K time of 22:47.9 to place 123rd.
Freshman Morgan Neher was next on the Wingate charts, traversing the 6K course with a time of 23:08.7. Classmates Alyssa Johnson and Ashley Hinderer followed with 6K times of 23:35.4 and 23:38.8, respectively, completing Wingate's top five.
Bulldog redshirt junior Brianna Stevens recorded a 6K time of 24:00.9, while senior Taylor Varnadoe posted a 6K time of 24:49.1. University of Mary (N.D.) senior Jennifer Agnew won the individual title with a 6K time of 20:50.7.
Grand Valley State (Mich.) won the team title with 54 points. The Lakers were the defending champions. Colorado schools occupied the next two spots: Adams State was second with 91 points, while Western State was third with 194 points.
Duchampt, meanwhile, was able to hold his own against stiff competition in the men's championship 10K, hitting the 5000 meter split in the 10th place, only three seconds off the lead. The second half of the race was a battle with Duchampt crossing the finish line with a time of 31:02.4 in 24th. Duchampt' s experience at the race proved to be advantageous over his Southeast region competitors as he was the top finisher of the group.
It concludes a successful junior cross country season for Duchampt after he won the SAC Championship individual title, and finished with a top-5 finish at the Southeast Regionals.
Tabor Stevens of Adams State came from behind to win the national championship. His finishing time was 29:50.1. He was the only runner to crack the 30 minute mark on the day. Vegard Olstad (Western State), Alex Monroe (Lock Haven), Mike Biwott (American International), and Aaron Dinzeo rounded out the top 5 in the championship meet.
Adams State took the men's team title for the second straight year after scoring a 54.
