Carson-Newman's William Alderman Tabbed South Atlantic Conference Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Carson-Newman’s William Alderman was voted the South Atlantic Conference football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the League announced today. He earned the honor for his achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference’s championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC’s Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.
Alderman, a senior physical education major, carries a 3.32 GPA. He was named to the Dean’s List during his sophomore, junior and senior years and was tabbed an Eagle Scholar his junior and senior years. He is a recipient of the Opportunity Scholarship all four years at Carson-Newman and capped off his career with a pair of Capital One Academic All-District selections his junior and senior years. This past season, Alderman was named a semifinalist for the William Campbell Trophy National Scholar-Athlete.
He was a mainstay for the Carson-Newman defense as he finished his career with 124 tackles and 18 tackles for loss. This past season against Lenoir-Rhyne, Alderman picked up a fumble and took it 78 yards for a score. He earned Carson-Newman Player of the Week honors five times in his career and earned the Carson-Newman Roy Harmon Award as a junior.
Alderman was named an American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team nominee after spending countless hours in the community volunteering. He served as a Sunday School teacher in the local churches and was a participant and musician with the Bonners Scholars’ “Coffee House” program to help raise money for local missions projects. Alderman also served as a peer mentor and spiritual leader for children who come from a non-spiritual household.
On campus, Alderman serves as the president for Carson-Newman’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a member of the Carson-Newman Organizational Congress which helps to lead all of the campus ministries. Alderman served as a member of the Carson-Newman Student-Athlete Advisory Council, while serving with the football team in the annual Carson-Newman Summer Campus Cleanup.
