The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week, Oct. 26
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games the seventh week of the season. Mars Hill wide out Gilbert Johnson was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate and defensive back Carl Mattox was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Carson-Newman's Carson Wise picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Johnson, a freshman from Homestead, Fla., hauled in three touchdowns and 147 yards of receiving in Mars Hill's win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 24. He caught eight passes to average 18.4 yards per catch, including a long of 39 yards. His biggest catch of the contest came with 1:35 left in the game as he hauled in a 16-yard reception to push the Lions to the 41-37 win. He also chipped in a 16 yards rushing in the contest. The win over Lenoir-Rhyne marked the Lions' first win over the Bears since the 2010 season. The award is Johnson's first Offensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Mattox, a junior from Athens, Ga., paced the Lions defense as he came away with 16 tackles and one tackle for loss in the win over the Bears. He posted 11 solo stops and his tackle for loss dropped the Bears back three yards. The honor is his first Defensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Wise, a freshman from Blacksburg, Va., hit the game-winning field goal in overtime lift the Eagles to a 41-38 win over then No. 21 Wingate on Oct. 24. He also connected on a 35-yard field goal late in regulation to give the Eagles a three point advantage. On extra points, Wise was a perfect 5-for-5. The honor is his second Special Teams Player of the Week nod this season.
