South Atlantic Conference Announces Football Players of the Week, Oct. 3 (Watch)
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the season. Lenoir-Rhyne running back Nelson Brown was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Wingate defensive back Moryah Johnson and Bears' defensive back Sherrod Williams were named the Co-Defensive Players of the Week. Meanwhile, Tusculum return man Evan Altizer picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Brown, a redshirt freshman from Salisbury, Md., rolled up 200 yards on the ground and one touchdown to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 20-17 win at Carson-Newman on Oct. 1. He carried the ball 35 times for Bears to average 5.7 yards per carry, including a long run of 54 yards. The honor marks his first Offensive Player of the Week award this season.
Johnson, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., posted three interceptions in the Bulldogs' 45-26 win over Limestone on Oct. 1. He notched 17 yards of return on his picks and anchored a Wingate defense that forced five turnovers on the afternoon. The award marks his first Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Williams, a freshman from Edison, Ga., posted five tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in leading the Bears to the victory over Carson-Newman Saturday on the road. Williams returned a pick 45 yards on the Eagles' final possession to seal the game for the Bears. Williams also returned a fumble 37 yards in the first quarter which set up the Bears' first touchdown of the game. Carson-Newman came into the game averaging 565 yards per game of total offense but was limited to just 250 yards on the day. The award his first Defensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Altizer, a junior from Weddington, NC., averaged 22.3 yards on his three punt returns in Tusculum's 21-14 win over Brevard on Oct. 1. He finished the contest with 67 total yards as he posted returns of 20, 21, and 26 yards. His 21-yard return to the Brevard College 37 set up the game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. He followed that effort with a 26 yard return to the BC 41 to set the table for the game-winning score. The award is his first Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season.
